What is the preferred Email client for use on Windows 8.1 and is it preferable to have Email on the Web (as in Outlook) or Download it to PC ?

I have been running Win Mail (from Vista) over the last couple of years on both Win 7 and now Windows 8.1 and thought of swopping over to Outlook.com. Recommendations please.

I just use the Mail client app, but then my live ID is my main email so its fine for that.

I would more than likely jump onto the online/web Outlook (as part of Win 8.1) however one of the issues is not being able to have contact groups.

Mines on my PC mainly because I like to have it running in the background, it gives me a popup in the corner when I've received an email and because I'm weird. I'm using Outlook 2013 I'll no doubt get some stick for that but I like it.

I can understand why you like it on your PC, I have used Outlook from my office 2010 install, however preferred Windows mail, but have been thinking about using an online client as I could then be able to view/read Email from my Ipad and/or phone etc.

It's totally possible to use a mail client on your phone or PC to check mail but also be able to read it anywhere, and it's called not using POP.

Who provides your email? If you're unfortunate and it is POP then you can use Outlook.com or Gmail to pull it into that system, at which point you can access it on any number of clients.

I have both Gmail and an live.co.uk account, but I do need the ability to put my contacts into groups, e.g. one click sends an email to 20 people (normally jokes etc)

Here's my current setup:

Everything gets redirected to it's correct folders automatically, well the known domains.

I use Thunderbird with my Google Apps account using IMAP so I can access stuff anywhere I want to.

This. Got a couple of accounts, access them all through thunderbird. Saves having to log out then back in to check them, plus it gives a little popup when I receive email as well.

I use gmail for everything (personal address is gmail, uni email is google apps hosted) and tend to access it online/ through my phone. I do have outlook 2013 though, and tempted to set it up just to see what it's like. Email at work is accessed through outlook 2010, and it's quite a nice piece of software...

My email is through my own domain name hosted at godaddy, I access it via a web browser or through an email account in outlook (after the NSA has checked it out) :).
