Health & Safety guy sent this over today just for a look. Original e-mail was picking up on cleaning regimes possibly.
Think the pics had come through a friend of his whos sister had experienced mild PC failage...

To me, this does not look like it would have been caused by dust?
Poor cabling + heat build up + possible short = Graphics card component failure possibly? Possibly just a freak occurance also...

I've certainly seen FAR dustier machines before...
What do peple here think? Impossible to tell what could be the cause?

Edit: Hmm, might have to resize those...

it doesn't look too dusty, just looked like a lot of cables in one place overheating.
but on closer inspection it looked like just 2 cables, but they are twisted with each other to make it look like there is more.

it could just be a faulty cable, or something on the graphics card went pop.

looking at the heatseat, do you think all that dust/soot came before or after the fire?
that could have been making the case and the surrounding components very hot, could be another cause.

i'll make sure i'll check my parents pc tonight, give it a quick clean.

freak occurance, could have also been a faulty motherboard, ASUS boards aren't very good these days...

Looks like the USB header could have shorted!

Typical health and safety BS imo.

Much more likely to be a faulty cable. Ive managed to short a 12V fan wire and it promptly burnt and melted the whole wire.

Dount very much it was a dust issue. I have that board and its a lot dustier and I have melted anything!

That cable goes right past the onboard wireless chip which does get warm but not that warm.

Id speculate that maybe some cabling got caught in the fan, damaged the insulation and shorted out causing a nice melting effect.

look at the angle of dangle on the gfx fan i wouls say overheated gpu build up of dust and heat dump from other parts caused that!

Good to see it's not just me who doesn't see dust as the ultimate fire causing enemy. :)
It looks a bit of a mess round the components, I was having a hard time thinking where it would have started.

A couple of weeks ago my mates laptop power brick sparked and went bang in my hand, that was a bit scary!

PK!

wow, what was above the GPU, sept fore the wiring, never seen anything that bad, seen a power supply bust into flames before with me near it !

but not like that
