Bit of advice please, I'm about to start applying for a new job and some companies ask for me to email them a copy of my CV, but I'm not sure which format I should use, MS office .doc or do I send a .pdf? or do I just type it up on notepad and send it as a .txt?

Any suggestions appreciated.

I think a PDF would look professional and it takes any issues of different pc's formatting things in strange ways

Why not ask them before you send it?

Or is that a bit too obvious?

Pdf unless specified otherwise.

This is what I do if a format isn't specified, if they want it in a different format then they can ask for it.

PDF removes the guesswork out of which format to use and you know exactly how your CV will look regardless of their software.

I've always used .doc

Nobody ever seems to mind.Like you say, most agencies even request it.

Main reason I use PDF is I make my CVs in Pages, which is an Apple app - it comes out perfectly in PDF but if I'm asked for a .doc I knock together a Word CV because the way my CV's laid out doesn't translate properly from Pages to Word without me remaking it.

always pdf, never send out anything in an editable format!
Use acrobat pro and set up the viewing options etc so they can tell you've thought about the way it is presented to them

.doc - from someone who reads 5k cvs a year.

NEVER .docx - if you're using Word 2007, make sure you save as .doc and not .docx

doc is even preferable over pdf by so many managers who are more comfortable with word than acrobat
