Emails havent been sending so had a look in the Exchange system manager and under servers and Queues the SmallBusiness SMTP connector - smtp.ukadsl.eng.net state reads Retry.

When you click on it the additional que information reads - The connection was dropped by the remote host.

Any ideas of what I can do next?

From the server try this in a command window: telnet smtp.ukadsl.eng.net 25
If it's working you should see a banner similar to:
220 smarthost01.mail.zen.net.uk ESMTP Exim 4.63 Wed, 13 Oct 2010 13:34:14 +0000

You could always set it to send email directly out via DNS by changing the option in the connector.

I got 220 smarthost01.eng.net ESMTP Ready. Wed, 13 Oct 2010 14:40:16 +0100

Havent a clue how to change anything to do with the DNS sadly.

Is there any reason it should have just stopped working?

1) reboot your server
2) telnet to the SMTP port of the relay server to make sure you can resolve it
3) look in your event logs see if it tells you anything useful
4) Call the isp who's server you are relaying off
5) check it will allow you to relay via telnet - it will tell you if there is an error

Also look in the queue to see if there is an abnormally large e-mail being sent out. This happened to one of our customers who tried to send a 250mb attachment - twice! The connection to the relay server kept dropping and everything else in the queue just sat there until the offending mails were deleted.

The reason she was even allowed to send mail that large is another story altogether.
