Had to endure this disgusting programme recently, and the only thing I'm left wondering is: why? Why do these people come on national TV for problems that can usually be fixed for free on the NHS? Do they get paid or something?

I'd rather keep the problem than let all my friends and family see me on TV showing it off. In fact, that'd be the last place I'd go if I had a dodgy penis or something...

Because GP surgery normally have a huge waiting list and when you do get in, you spend most of the time getting referred from place to place, it's easier for them to talk to consultants.

There was a chap on there once who worked in a pub. He had a stinky bum, he said the punters would be talking about him etc and he overheard.

Doctor took a look, said he was basically useless at wiping his own **** and to revise his technique.

WHY WOULD YOU GO ON NATIONAL TV TO TELL EVERYONE YOU CAN'T WIPE YOUR OWN ANUS!!!!!!111ONE

/RANT.

One of the worst episodes I saw while flipping channels was one where they had 4 or 5 semen samples in jars and one of them looked like whisky.

I didn't stay to find out what was wrong with that guy...

once you start watching you cant turn it off :P

+ its always nice to know you are better off than others.

I saw the smelly bum one too... seriously.. oh and another bum one jesus.. why do the bum ones freak me out so. Weeping sores and pus mmmmm

it can be disgusting but it can also be informative when they focus on certain things, say moles and how to protect yourself etc. there will be a lot of people too embarrassed to talk about some of their problems so this might spur them to action

but yeah lots of ewwww
i remember there was a poor fella on with only half a face! you could practically see his brains

It is a bit odd how people don't go to their own doctor in private, but then end up baring all to a national audience.

I remember one where a woman had some kind of rectal muscle issue and couldn't physically squeeze out a log. Somehow, she thought this was normal and had spent most of her life picking/pulling out poo with her hands before she got on the show and ended up getting minor surgery to sort it out.

People are weird.

If it encourages people to be less squeamish about going to the doc it can't be too bad a show. Like others have said, hard to switch over if you find it sometimes

I'd agree with that.

You see people on the show who have had no real help and have tried a number of health professionals, so are hoping they might be able to get more definitive help from the show because they want to see people through to a resolution in order to make good tv.

Then you also have those who don't have private medical insurance and are hoping they can get the treatment they won't get on the NHS.

So there are certainly some legitimate reasons for doing so. Perhaps not so much though for those who have quite a common condition and have to reveal all on tv.
