Right..back in the day on p2 400's...it was really important to have 2 sticks of ram to get a stable overclock.

Is that still the issue now in 2010 with a modern cpu? like an i5 or i7 or would it be fine temp on 1 2gb stick for example? :)

I'm basically asking if they still "dual-link" up like yonks ago.

Thanks and sorry for being daft :p

You can only have 1 stick but it will be faster with 2 for Dual Channel. I would recommend having two sticks of 2GB for Win7/Vista.

i5 is dual channel
i7 is triple channel

you will need the correct number of sticks to get optimum running speed for your memory. However, to get a stable overclock it does not have to run in dual or triple mode - one stick will run in single channel and will allow you to overclock your cpu as far is it will go, it just wont run the memory at the best speed.

In general its always been the same when overclocking memory. The less sticks the better :p

The more sticks you introduce the higher the chances that either one of the sticks, or the memory controller will run into problems due to the overclock.

However on the I5 and I7 you have much more control over the memory speeds and timing than you used to on old p4 systems and its easier to keep the ram happy even if all the banks are filled.

You may have to lower the overall ram speed but it will still be easily fast enough for purpose.

Dual Channel are still optimum, even if you get a 1366 mobo, you'll get away with Dual Channel sticks without missing out much performance-wise (and only where memory bandwidth matters). Single channel sticks are not recommended though.
