Embracer group acquired rights to the LOTR and the Hobbit

Reportedly 750 million, also some weird shenanigans with the original license that Saul Zaent Co bought in 76, apparently its only moves/tv shows that are under 8 episodes, shows over 8 episodes are retained by The Tolkien Estate. And of course you've also got the issue that LotR books go into public domain soon (70 years after an author dies).
