hi all,
I took my computer to a LAN tonight, plugged in, and when I flicked the switch on my PSU, there was a cracking noise and I could see light coming from inside the PSU (it wasn't the LEDs!) so I turned it off imediately, and didnt attempt to start my computer, so what I would like to know is...

-What are the chances that my components have survived?
-If I were to borrow a friends PSU to test, would there be any risk to said PSU?

thanks, Trojan.

edit: my PSU is a kingwin mach 1 600w

IMO the parts inside your pc are going to be fine, do not turn the pc back on though and get a new psu, testing uising your friends psu will be fine, components inside your pc don't usualy cause the psu to fail only turn off if there is a short.

Really depends, first thing I would do is check the motherboard etc isnt shorting / making contact with the case, maybe in transit stuff moved..

If there is a short it will probably kill your mates pc as well.

If you want to test your parts find a cardboard box and build it on top of it outside the case to be safe.

Assume you need to buy a new PSU, worth a shot outside the case on a box tho.

Sounds like your PSU isn't too healthy. Unplug your psu and power connectors to the components and try another PSU. You're not going to know of any dmage until you test with another PSU... Other PSU should be fine.. sounds like you have a duff PSU and something (capacitor maybe?) has blown - is there a smell of burnt electronics coming from it?

You won't know till you put a new PSU in and try it. You could always look at the components and see if you can see and damage but best to try a new one and test.

yeah sorry should have mentioned I assumed the PSU would be dead.
Have calmed down now and had a better look, cant see anything that has obviously shorted, and there is a slightly burnt smell but I could only smell it if I put my nose almost against the grill of the PSU.
Will test soon with my friends 750w

imo products arnt as delicate and fragile as companys make them out 2 be

True but pc's aren't designed to be moved about as thats where laptops etc come into play. Even getting a PC delivered now can course massive problems due to the sheer bulk of heatsinks etc, snapping retainer clips and causing all sorts of damage.

You can also try jusy fitting a fan tot he psu and jury rigging the psu to see if it still works by connecting I think its pin 15 and 16 together which will start the psu up. Google it

To turn on the supply, connect PS_ON# to a COM signal. PS_ON# is green,
and COM (same as ground, black in color) is adjacent to it. If you connect
a paper clip from PS_ON# to COM, the power supply fan should start to spin.

Many years ago I had a cheap no name PSU in a generic pre-built fail, everything else survived, so as already stated... it's the luck of the draw.

hey guys thanks for all the 'don't worry.........yet' posts!
Have just ordered an HX850 modular corsair :D so I guess we'll know on Monday, if that's no good, I'll have to get more hours at domino's and get myself a cheap i3 setup in a few weeks.
Hopefully my HDDs have survived, I'm feeling optimistic as I noticed the slight crackling noise BEFORE I tried to power up the PC, so no HDDs were spun up etc. at the time. no point

iDevil: "I had a PSU that went up in smoke once lol and the components survived."
thanks that's really good to know, didnt wanna sink a months pay into a new one if chances were slim.

vectisitch: "it's the luck of the draw.i had a psu go once and it fried my motherboard and 4 hard drives.hope not in your case, but be prepared" I'm prepared for the possiblity, but when it happened to you, was the PC on?

thanks again, roll on monday :D

Last fault I had took out the motherboard, the processor (!), but the psu and even ram were fine. There's really no way to know before testing.

I'd be a lot more confident if your psu didn't have Kingwin written on it though.

The only time i ever had a psu problem was a brand new 600w seasonic s12, blew up the first time it was turned on.:(

Do people ship PC's with big heatsinks attached? I've always detached anything that could be damaged in transit and wrapped up safely when shipping.
