Emergency Tax GRR!

Chippie well done for all of your valuable and correct information.

There is only one usual instance when the BR tax code is used and that is when you have filled out a P46 and signed to say that this is not your only job, if you have 2 jobs then one will be at BR if you only have one job you will never be put on BR unless your payroll department has made a mistake.

Stop being angry at HMRC they have done nothing wrong, go to your payroll department and ask them why they put you on BR, as it was only them that did it, they should have either used your P45 or asked you to fill in a P46 (only used if your P45 is missing) which would result in you having a tax code or the code 647LW1/M1.

It always amazes me that people can get so angry at HMRC for their own ignorance, it's your money and your tax being deducted if I was you I would find out how it all works, because it isn't really that hard.

I feel as though I am just feeding the monster under the bridge, not to worry my older brother will get him.

To be on the safe side you would charge the 50% rate in case they are a high earner. The real reason they charge 20% on all earnings is to rake in as much money as possible to earn interest on it, the proper thing for HMRC to do is to take no tax in case that person is only earning £6k a year and would starve if they were taxed on that.

Well, statisticly you're more likely to be in the 20% tax band so it's the safest and most logical solution.

I got emergency taxed for months when i started my job despite them having a recent, 2 day old P45

Im on the correct code now but still waiting for a refund

Yep, same here. Asked them about it not long after my first pay slip and they said "once you're on the correct rate, you'll get it refunded in your pay packet". Never had it.

2 weeks ago I had a letter saying "your tax code for this year is BR..." wtf? I've been on 647L since the end of June? Phoned them up, and as Co-Op is ready to launch in remaining Somerfield stores, they thought this was a second job and slapped on BR again. Thankfully I'm back on 647L again, but again I queried my overpayments at the start of the year (April/May) and he said I may have paid less tax over time. Gave him the amounts from my wage slips but they were correct. Gimme my money, dammit! :p

As PAYE works on a cumulative basis once you are on the correct tax code any past over/under payments should be worked through your PAYE deductions.

How do you know it wasn't your payroll department just being slow at sending the P45 off?

Oh, who am I kidding? HMRC have a backlog of letters for about 6-12 weeks.

Exactly. Good to know that the idiots are taking 3 months to send out UTRs/ acknowledge 64-8s so there's a very real chance people's returns will be late through HMRCs incompetence.

Edit: as most of the guys in here have said though, it's payroll's fault in this case by the sounds of it. Not surprising mind, payroll and HR depts seem useless. The main time BR should be used is on payments after the P45 has been submitted.

^^^ This.

Btw i took in all the informatoin from all the "informed posters" and stoped raging lmao.

No need for the useless memes I so dont conform to them <3

The thing is they sent it off but somtimes HMRC just have a backlog of submitions which is probably why itl take a few months before i get paid anything back.

Oh well.

I got taxed at BR on my last job as I gave the wrong NI number :(. Once they new who I was I got 522L, any tax I paid(through overtime) I got back as a tax credit in my wages in the following months.

My new job I started and filled out a P46,got taxed on 647L - Month1(emergency tax) which was actually bang on. The next month I got taxed on 647L but paid more tax :S then this month I got 647L but got taxed properly again. Big wtf.

You are a mad tory, what else will you have to say on the matter?

So the do more with less mantra doesn't work then?

Painful thread is painful.

Oh well.

It's got nothing to do with HMRC in all probability.

I actually liked the emergency tax when I started working... I left it for a few months, and then claimed it all back and got over £1000. To put that in perspective, I was on about £300/month whilst part time doing that and college :)

You seem to have ignored everything anyone's said? I'm not sure what you're waiting for HMRC to do?

I'd suggest your read HMRC's employer guidance for new employees if you don't believe anyone here:

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/paye/employees/start-leave/tax-codes.htm

If you give them your P45, which you've said has the tax code 647L on it, then your employer should use that code if the form is correctly completed. They don't need anything from HMRC - that's what they have to do.

HMRC can then send an updated code if they decide that it is inappropriate. Though for them to have replied already with BR is unlikely on three counts: 1. They're understaffed, as has been hinted, 2. BR would be totally wrong and 3. You, personally, would have had a letter stating the change.

So, as has been suggested a few times, find out from your payroll dept why they've decided to use BR.
