EMI is taking software locks off some of its digital music songs sold via download sites.

The "premium" versions of EMI tracks will lack the digital locks common to songs available via many online sites.

The bad news is the price of these "Premium" tracks will rise to 99p. Apple/EMI claim the increased sound quality justifies this, but anyone interested in sound quality would probably want to buy the CDs and rip lossless anyway.

What do you think?

I think it's great I might actually buy online now. Now i'll be able to do as I pleas with the track and its better detail :)

It's still not good enough for me.

As One More Solo says, in most cases you can get the CD for less. I'd much rather do this. Not only do you have something physical (which is always satisfying and it feels like you've actually bought something) but you also have the ability to do whatever you want, and rip it to whatever quality you want.

I won't be using iTunes until they offer lossless downloads, ever. If I like a chart song, I usually go out and buy the single, and I still reckon it's better to pay 2 quid for the actual CD.

And why should people pay extra to obtain tracks without DRM? I hope the EU prevent this price discrimination in Europe. I mean it's 66p/track in France vs 79p here. Competitors like eMusic are much better value. You pay something like £12/month and get 100 downloads, and their library has some really interesting stuff in it.
