Me and my missus have just completed the paperwork applying for residence in New Zealand, been talking/planning it for what feels like ages and can't quite wrap my head around the fact we've finally done it! We have enough points to get automatically selected and we're hoping to be in New Zealand within 6-12 months :)

Anyone else going/thinking of going down the same track?

My brother emmigrated around 9 months ago and is loving every second of it :)

He said no matter how much he researched though he wasn't prepared for the extreme change of culture - not in a bad or difficult way i.e. change to japan - but he said there are so many unusual ways of life and traits over there compared to the UK. .. but half the fun is finding them out & experiencing them :)

Advice: grow to hate the Possum and you'll fit right in :p

Great to hear that, thanks :)

No

There's 3 resident visa

Single - One entry within 2 yrs or you loose it
Multiple - As many times in and out but must be there with 2 years
Indefinite - Doesn't matter when/how many

As far as I know there is only one option for the Skilled Migrant Category since it is based on your current experience and the skills shortage list. If we are accepted then we have 12 months to move to New Zealand. This is what we've been told by the NZ Immigration Service anyway!

We're looking initially at Christchurch since finding jobs there will be easier than where we actually want to live (on the Banks Peninsula).

As for the money side of things, we're not going there for a better quality of life in the sense of having more disposable income. Between us, me and the missus earn £150k per year (pre-tax) but we're both country people at heart and we're also planning a family and the idea of trying to raise kids in this country does not appeal to us.

We are both outdoors people, we love hiking, paragliding and (when snow permits) snowboarding. My missus is also planning to run a small horse yard in 5-10 years time and trying to do that here is not practical. Neither of us are the clubbing type and much prefer having friends round rather than going out on huge p-ups.

It is a much quieter country that's for sure but that is a lot of the appeal and it's as much about what NZ can offer as what the UK can't.

Ultimately, it might not go how we hoped, whether that be immediately or in 20 years but we can always go somewhere else and I'm thinking it's better to take the chance now when money allows rather than stay here and wish in ten years time that we'd given it a shot.

Baz - that's great news mate, how long did it take for you to hear back?

For the EOI, about a day :D

We just happened to apply for it the day before the acceptance pool, doesn't mean we are in for sure, but we should get the ITA stuff within a month.
:)

From the people we have spoken to, the ITA is a drawn out process but essentially as long as your EOI was all true and you don't have any medical issues then it *should* be a formality :)

How many points did you have by the way?

I've also been looking at emigrating to NZ. Is that £150k pounds or NZD?

If NZD you'll be very happy with that. If pounds then you'll be extrememly well off.

That's £150k here, realistically we won't earn anywhere near that when we move over but we're only 27 and will have a fair amount saved up so it won't be a problem hopefully.

I reckon looking at wages that I could earn in Auckland, me & the missus will get around $150kNZD possibly more. If I can start my own business the sky is the limit.. but it isn't all about the money.

Over there I can follow a dream, and that is to become a Diving instructor, and over here I couldn't afford to do it, but over there after a while, I reckon I can :)

So over here, 45 hours a week, knackered all the time with miserable weather and taxed to the hilt compared to nice weather, warm sea's and I can become a paid beach bum and dive occaisonally... hmmm not sure what I would go for to be honest :p

Replace diving with paragliding and horseriding and that is our plan too once I get bored of IT Security (shouldn't take long eh?!)

We got accepted!! :)

This is only the first step but the rest is just more paperwork to confirm everything we said is true and that we don't have some murky criminal past (we also have to pay some more money). So fingers crossed that this time in 12 months we'll be there!

It is indeed mate, anything from 3-6 months from being selected to actually being able to move and that's if you don't have any problems. Still, 3-6 months isn't that bad in the grand scheme of things and the getting selected is the only part where you can really be knocked back so we should both be in NZ soon!
