Emotive music

I'm a big fan of a certain type of music which seems to be vastly overlooked, and practically never discussed. As far as I know it has no official name, so I'm coining the phrase 'emotive music'. Some of it is classed as pop, some of it metal, some of it rock, alternative or new age or even classical, and a lot of it is synthesised.

I'm talking about a certain type of music which is usually purely instrumental, usually has electric guitar or some sort of electrical feel to it, and which has a certain je ne se quoi which stirs the soul and can even bring about shivers. I don't know if I've described it well enough to isolate in peoples' minds exactly the type of music I'm thinking of, so here are some examples:

The Brazilian by Genesis
Bladerunner main theme tune by Vangelis
Certain of the Moroder music from the 1984 reworking of Metropolis (you'll know the bits I mean if you have any idea of what I'm talking about in this thread)
Climbatize by Prodigy
Magnetic Fields 2, Equinoxe 4, Oxygene 3, and Chronologie 4 by Jarre
Paul's Theme from the film Cat People (by Moroder)
November Rain by Guns 'n' Roses (specifically the music)
Hymn and God Moving Over the Face of the Waters by Moby

I'm not a great fan of it myself, but an example some people might find it easier to relate to is that Barber's Strings that got clubbered to death by the house bods a few years back.

Does anyone relate to this?

I have a lot of music by Jean Michel Jarre and Mike Oldfield.

I know what you mean. Certain music sends tingles down your spine and gives you a head rush...Music can make you feel good :D

Give Jean Michel Jarre - Rendezvous 4 a go.

Dunno, never heard of them, but I'll have a listen as soon as I'm able and report back. :)

It's kinda havy.
No lyrics and emotive and stunning IMO.
Hurry up and listen :p

Also:

Masahiro Ando - Moon over the castle. It's the gran turismo theme tune.

Mogwai - We're no here

Mogwai - Auto rock

:)

Definitely explore more into electronica if you enjoy that kind of stuff. You might find you like ambient, as I find it very emotive, but many find it doesn't have enough substance.

Good call on JMJ though. Equinoxe and Oxygene are both incredible, the musical soundscapes they take you through is phenomenal. Jarre is a hero of mine. :)

Emotive?

Sounds a lot like post-rock to me.

I'll list a billion and one songs for you to listen to when I get the chance.

Cavalleria Rusticana: Intermezzo - Orchestra Of Bologna Municop Thetra

Listen to that, its the music from the film Raging Bull (Robert DeNiro). If you search on t'internet for the Raging Bull soundtrack, you should find a large forest like place selling the cd with a clip you can listen to.

Surely the point of all music is to be emotive? I think this "genre" is pretty much subjective to you. :)

Yes, but there's a difference between the latest Sugababes single, and an epic piece of classical music.

because of the person that you are, you relate to it differently. there's people in the world (though i'd question their integrity) who will find Sugababes more emotive than Mozart
