Anyone else think that anyone who does this looks like an absolute spanner?

When did this come about?

Did someone invent this like 50 years ago? I bet they were trolling and probably watching world leaders on TV interview and ******* themselves.

I don't get it in the slightest.

Do you do it? And do you think it makes you look cool?

lol...I do find it unreasonably annoying if I'm driving and the person in front is throwing shapes/waving trheir hands about when having a conversation with their passenger!

Lack of gesticulating is common with autism.

Edit: I think I meant gesturing.

Don't most people do this? Some more than others, but I would say in my experience most people use hand gestures at least occasionally during conversation.

Some of you will be too young to remember him.

As an actual technique, it came about at some point shortly after the invention of the lecture... so probably Ancient Greek times, I'd say.
Watching someone simply stand there, completely stock still, and just talking for an hour or so is boring as ****, and makes them look like a Tory accountant from Monty Python. It also runs against to natural human body language, which has existed ever since we lost our tails, so the techniques were developed to make the speaking they accompany appear more authentic.

I can see how that might be asserted... I'm not entirely convinced there's any direct correlation, but feel free to whack up some substantiating links. I'd be interested...

My 6yr old does this, so now knows what the word gesticulating means... she walks around telling people she's always gesticulating too much when she talks. People think we're ******* odd.

Wow, he was (is?) some guy. I thought I used my hands a bit too much when I get passionate about topics, but nothing on this scale.

‘They take you into hospital and shove a tube up a convenient orifice...’ LOL!

I could watch him to him all day.

Without gesticulating, Italians would be unable to communicate. In their defence, they already talk so loudly that even Spaniards and Drill Sergeants wince, so they have to find another way to provide emphasis.

Brits waving their hands around like they’re being fingered by an electrical eel do indeed look like an entire set of spanners.
