Okay this is a subject that intrest me the most, Empires :)

Which was the most succesful empires in world history?

Empires: 1 to 40 by amount of land under its control; amount of people under its control

1. Empire (noun): a state that extends its dominons over other nations, cultures, ethnicites different, foreign, and seperate from itself/its center of power; an Empire must have an age of atleast 150 years between its rise and fall

2. For example, neither the Mongols nor the Greeks under Chingis Khan/Alexander are considered empires because they broke off within a few years of their leaders death. A seperate list must be made for the likes of Chinngis Khan, Asoka, Chandragupta Maurya, Kubilai Khan, Harsha, Alexander, Qin Shi Huang, and the Atilla who were all fantastic Conquerors, but their soverignty had not survived for 150 years prior to their deaths.

3. Modern day Empires like the American Empire and Indian Empire are not counted because the extent of their history is not known (what will happen in the future?)

The British Empire comprised the dominions, colonies, protectorates, mandates, and other territories ruled or administered by the United Kingdom (UK), that had originated with the overseas colonies and trading posts established by England in the 17th century. At its height it was the largest empire in history and, for over a century, was the foremost global power. By 1922, the British Empire held sway over a population of about 458 million people, one-quarter of the world's population,[1] and covered more than 14,000,000 square miles (36,260,000 km²): approximately a quarter of Earth's total land area.[2] As a result, its political, linguistic and cultural legacy is widespread. At the peak of its power, it was often said that "the sun never sets on the British Empire" because its span across the globe ensured that the sun was always shining on at least one of its numerous territories.

Not bad for a county our size eh? We as a nation have achieved so much, are you proud to be British? I am know to be far to Paiotric hence this thread! :D :D

No point, there is no British Empire any more, just a small island, of which a good portion of the population isn't or doesn't consider themselves British.

What do they consider them self’s then? Of course they are British, well yes the empire is no more but its reign and influence is still seen to this day, safe to say it’s the last of the large Empires.

to be fair, proportionately a lot of those lesser empires may have been bigger than the more modern ones as america hadn't been discovered.

added to that the british empire was based largely on quashing people with spears and cow hide shields (notice we lost our colonies in america for example, where the 'enemy' were on a level pegging). i think the more ancient empires achieved vastly more with the resources and manpower of the time, can you imagine moving 5000 soldiers across the globe at the height of the british empire compared to the Roman empire? and the sheer cost of keeping massively bigger armies needed for continuous occupation.

We lost our colonies in America because of those dam French winning it for them! :p ;)

Oops getting mixed up :p

Sorry getting mixed up myself, it had massive help from France, without them they wouldn’t of being able to hold out and also the Spanish helped too, so with 3 we had a massive challenge, they got there colonies back, we then went onto better things at the time which was Australia :)

It says why it isn't in the opening post, after Khan's death it dissolved fairly rapidly although the man didn't half sow his wild oats given the percentage of present day Mongols who have some genetic linkage to the fellow.

The British Empire was a stunning achievement but what impresses me the most is that sometimes it seemed to expand simply on the basis of "I say Rupert, I would rather like to see what is in that country there" and then it was annexed into the Empire shortly after.

Yeah that’s the impression I have of them as well :D must have being very strange discovering these islands and wonder what was there!

Whilst the stastics are impressive in terms of their size, I don't really know why people are proud of the British Empire... our colonialism (read: desperate crusade for wealth and power) is what helped carve up Africa and create it's problems today, set the stage for perpetual interference in the middle east and of course inspired us to fight two wars with China to force them to import our heroin, because them saying no to drugs was bad for profit.

Sailing a massive military force up to a country, with its cannons on show and basically saying "We'll be taking care of things from now on" is exactly what everyone nowadays criticises the USA and the UK for doing with Iraq, yet the British people are proud that we did this to 400 million people in the past?

Today’s society is very much different though, like I said there won’t be another Empire like this, yes we have created problems but have given so much.

I'm starting to thing the exclusion of certain empires is flawed and a bit puzzling - it doesn't quite make sense. It seems to have plucked a reason out of thin air just such that British Empire could end up top.

Every bit of information about Empires puts the British empire out on top, you seem to be a bit funny about something?

Not at all, I'm fairly curious about these things as well. I'm British, but ethnically Indian so possibly my interest is from a different view point. :)

Also reading this, - lots of issues are raised in it.

Ah okay sorry, just came across rather funny your reply that’s all.
Any History forum or website does list the British empire as the biggest in terms of size, wealth and power it was huge, heard the saying ‘The Empire the sun never sets on’ that’s because it stretched all round the globe, wasn’t too long ago the Empire was alive and kicking not like the Mongols which were hundreds of years before, just a subject that hugely interest me :)

The British Empire - built by Scots and Irish Navvys

Navigator, navigator rise up and be strong
The morning is here and theres work to be done.
Take your pick and your shovel and the bold dynamite
For to shift a few tons of this earthly delight
Yes to shift a few tons of this earthly delight.

Their mark on this land is still seen and still laid
The way for a commerce where vast fortunes were made
The supply of an empire where the sun never set
Which is now deep in darkness, but the railways there yet.

Build by Scots and the Irish? Okay show me where you read that please.

That’s a good picture, haven’t seen that one before :D
