I will be brief.

Not had much luck with employment agencies e.g. never get back to me, jobs they offer get cancelled.

I have heard about a job through an employment agency which they said they may put me forward for.

I know what company the job is with.

Should I just forward my CV and a cover letter directly to the company or wait to see what happens with the agency?

What industry are you looking for a job?
I find general agencies to be crap where as specific agencies are much better.

IT Specific agency. The role is IT administrator in South Wales. (if anyone has a job around Newport then drop me a line).

First agency I tried got me an IT job within the week, and I used to work at Starbucks!

I did a month doing tech support at a school for free tho, to get myself some experience :)

Try Randstad - I'm not one to pimp out agencies, and I can't wait to get a contract in a month, but I can't fault them for getting me a job so quickly!

Sorry but you are looking for a very general role that probably has a lot of people also in need of work.
Which agency is it?
Are you utilising the online websites for jobs and stuff?

Try to find work without using agencies. They work for themselves not you. You will suffer endless doubt and anger and frustration if you get involved with an agency.

Thanks for all the advice. It has confirmed my thoughts that agencies are not that good and direct approaches to companies are a better idea. Im going to send my CV this afternoon.

EDIT - The agency is a one in Cardiff, Id rather not say which one. I used Monster, etc but most are jobs via agencies.

I'm due to be made redundant in a few weeks time and I will probably have no choice but to join an agency as most jobs seem to be through an agency these days :(

In my line of work, you play one agency against the other - making them work for you.

If an agency ****** you about, you go and work for another (they are everywhere).

I know of a couple of HGV drivers who run their own agencys, from behind the wheel!

Each industry is different, but in HGV / LGV Driving agencys are becoming the norm - the trick is getting in with the one that pays the most! :D

I work full time, but remain on the books of 3 different agency's - my boss knows damn well I can say "bye" and goto work elsewhere at the drop of a hat if he annoys me too much. ;)
