employment reference question..

If I've applied for jobs and the new employers want to request references from my current employer, is the current employer allowed to disclose the reason for any sick absences taken?

I know they can obviously tell them the length of time I've taken and when but is the reason personal or not?

Their not allowed to disclose the reason for you being off, however they are, like you said allowed to specify how long you had been off whilst being employed there, they may ask you in an interview the reason for being off, you can either state what it was or say "its personal!"

It's strictly the number of days in the past X years, nothing more.
