Got an SSD today and after some trouble l managed to install Windows 7 on it. After reading about SSDs l learnt that it would be a good idea to have the SSD to AHCI.

Using the latest bios version for the motherboard l attempted to change the setting to AHCI before installing Windows. I could only select AHCI when in RAID mode. Is this normal? From what l remember RAID is only used when 2 drives are used and not a single one!

In addition l read that enabling RAID disables TRIM support, or am l mistaken?

You can use single disks in RAID mode without them being in a RAID array.

TRIM support is only disabled if the disks are in a RAID array, not if you're using them as single disks in RAID mode.

Thanks for the information. I will try setting the drive in AHCI then. I will need to re-install Windows after that, won't l? In addition will l need to install any other drivers on Windows in order to enable AHCI mode(presumable from my mobo download website) or will Windows sort everything out by itself?

Should be able to change to AHCI without a reinstall (Vista/Win7):

1. Startup "Regedit
2. Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SYSTEM / CurrentControlset / Services
3. Open msahci
4. In the right field left click on "start" and go to Modify
5. In the value Data field enter "0" and click "ok"
6. exit "Regedit"

Restart, go into bios and change to AHCI.

Again thanks for the information guys. Everything is running great now. Upgrading from a 5400rpm laptop drive to an ssd is quite an upgrade. :p
