Hi Peeps

Looking for some advice. I'm getting the house re-wired at the moment and getting all my Cat 6 taken back to the garage near the electrical consumer unit.

My intention is to have 2 x Cat6 to each of the living rooms and my study. The one living room has the fibre to property router and I'll connect that to one of the Cat 6 back to the garage. In the garage I'd like to put up a wall mounted enclosure to keep everything dust free in so far a possible. I'll put my Synology NAS and a network switch in the enclosure. The network switch will then feed the Cat 6 cables to my study and the other living room. In the future I'll probably be putting in CCTV using the NAS as the NVR.

I've never done anything like this before and I'm looking for any tips. What do I want in an enclosure? What type of network switch should I buy? How far will POE support CCTV's or am I going to need to run separate power supplies.

Any advice gratefully received.

All rack gear is measured in U in terms of height. So the more things you want to put in, the more U you need. 6U is common, and then upwards.

Then you need to determine depth. There are lots of data cabinets that are 300mm deep and you can probably get a switch in there, but it will limit you somewhat. 450mm is more flexible and by the time you get to 600mm deep the cabinet is pretty massive.

Measure up the kit you want to fit, and buy a cabinet big enough.

This is the sort of thing we routinely install.

In terms of the cabling, you want a patch panel. Personally, I like the ones that take keystones.

And these are the keystones.

The advantage of these is they can be wired up and then just plugged into the patch panel.

And you can get something similar for the wall sockets
