Encoder problems

Basically i gave my old machine to a mate of mine all i have done to it is formatted it.

So i install windows XP etc goto play a movie and its says some error about not a dvd-encoder ?

Anyone know what this problem is or howto solve it? it's proberbly a easy mistake but im stumped

Have you installed a DVD app, such as power dvd?

no to be honest i didnt think i needed to as i didnt when i had the machine..

grab vlc. plays dvds and just about every other conceivable video file...
