I'm just wondering how you guys encode for when your putting things online..

I'm a member of a few car meets and have rolling road days and so on, so I'd like to put the video online, but dont want the video to be too big as it would take forever and a day to upload.

I'm capturing the video from the Camcorder using Windows Movie Maker (I've not tried Nero 7 reloaded that I've got just yet) and it comes out well, but using the DV AVI mode, its 25mbps so it takes up a big chunk of my hard drive. I figure this is good for when you convert it into a smaller file, but I dont know how small or how to encode it to get the best I can?

I'm currently using Tmpgenc plus and I'm convertiting to VCD and Super VCD :) The results using VCD arent that great, but are better with Super VCD. I tried DVD but thats not working as its got separate files for the movie and the sound..

Suggestions and help would be great as I'm a bit of a novice at this, but want to get better!!

Many thanks for the help, its appreaited :)

Virtual dub is great. It will allow you convert the video to xvid and x.264, you can get dvd quality at about 1.3Mb/s. Vcd and svcd are long obselete now.

Cant you just run the file through WMM again and save them to a diferent format and bitrate? There are a huge amount of options for you to choose from and it een shows which ones you can use for different internet speeds. :)

For uploading its not more than 1 minutes footage at a time, but I still want to get the video looking good rather than pants! :p

I just wonder how's best to do it... But if I take the parts I need at the best quality, I guess that would work best...

They are all wmv though, wmv is crap compared to xvid.
