turck-mmcache (and then the renamed eAccelerator) used to be able to do it, but I think it's now been removed (and wasn't working properly on newer versions of PHP anyway).

If you need that functionality I suspect you are selling your code, so it'll just have to be one of those business expenses you need to pay. IonCube is regarded as one of the best out there and is considerably cheaper than the Zend offering - it's also got just as many hosts offering the loaders installed too.
