I just upgraded from a C2D E6600 to a Quad Q6600 and use Convert X to dvd to encode movies and don't see a whole lot of difference between the two. I am using the version of convert x which is supposed to be the fastest(dont think it is the latest though). I wonder if it is the program which isn't optimized for quad. Has anybody else been using quad to encode movies and what kind of results are you getting? :)
 
Ive been using my Quad Q6600 to encode movies from dvix using DVD movie creator 3 and I have noticed a big difference. But I was using a 4200 X2 before I moved to Quad.
 
I noticed one thing though, with convert x to dvd, a file that took 45 mins to convert on my athlon 3700+ now takes 10 mins to convert on my Q6600.

Which version of convert x are you using?

Anyone know any video encoding programs that support quad?
 
I know ConvertX To Dvd is supposedly having an update in the near future to use Quads and I also use Svcd2Dvd.. I dont know if that uses quad cores but its worth taking a look on the site
 
You might not be getting double the speed, but you will be able to do other things that you can't do with a single or dual-core while the software is encoding.

I use Nero vision 4 . I'm running my Q6600@ 2.9 and it has just taken me 13 minutes to recode a 700mb avi back to dvd. Nero utilises all four cores. Recoded same avi using latest convertxtodvd and it took 28 minutes. Hope this helps

Hmm 700mb takes around 18-20 minutes with convertx to dvd here. Ive used nero vision 4 in the past, dunno if it was just the version I had, but on vista 64 I had a lot of sync problems, where the audio was a couple of seconds out with the video. With convertx to dvd ive never had any sync issues after convertion, its solid as a rock :)
 
I like Nero Vision and Convertxtodvd.

Convertxtodvd seems to be nice and simple once you have it set up, hopefully a new version will be multithreaded then we are in business. ;)

Although Nero Vision uses more cores I dont find that it encodes much quick tbh than Convertxtodvd. Im not entirely convinced its setup properly for multi cores.

I will have another test later using the same avi for encoding. . .
 
The sync issues in Nerovision can be fixed easily, It's Nero's own codecs thats at fault. To fix:
locate and rename 2 files in
program files\common files\ahead\DSfiles

NeAudio.ax or NeAudio2.ax to OLDNeadio.ax or OLDNeadio2.ax
And
NeVideo.ax to OLDNeVideo.ax
You'll lose the preview window but everthing works fine, Just install a codec package of your own.
 
urghh, converting xvid to dvd!! buy a £20 divx player instead.

encoding movies to x264 is supposed to be a lot quicker and movies to xvid a slight improvement.

errrrrrrrrrrrrr nah :p , ..I get your point, but I have a perfectly good dvd player at the moment (although doesnt play xvid) that plays any disc I throw at it with dvd video files on it. Since it doesnt take long to convert xvid on my Quad now, i'll just wait untill this dvd player starts to pack in before buying the £20 one that plays xvid ;)

Just tried WinAVI 8 and that converts quickly, from 120fps to over 200fps+ and it burns the files quickly too, I just burnt a 700mb file in 3-4 minutes. The quality is good too :) Just installed Convert x version 2.2.3.258, think its the latest one. Will update thread once I have used it.

Update

Convert x didn't seem nowhere near as quick, when I tried encoding the same file with WinAVI the fps hit 300fps+ where convert x was only just hitting 100fps
