In what is turning into a graveyard of discontinued AMD processors, it has come to DailyTech's attention that a single-core Athlon 64 3000+ and 3200+ Socket 939 processors are getting the axe. AMD has just notified its distributors that it is terminating the Athlon 64 single-core Socket 939 3000+ and 3200+ components.

We’ve received confirmation that Socket 754 processors will indeed be available for a couple months after the early death of Socket 939. AMD Athlon 64 3700+ and 4000+ will be the first to get the axe on July 2nd of this year. Right before 2007 rolls around AMD intends on discontinuing seven Socket 939 and 754 processors. AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+, Athlon 64 3200+ and 3000+ Socket 939 processors will cease to exist December 31st, 2006 leaving the Athlon 64 X2 4800+ as the sole Socket 939 processor available.

I guess it comes as no suprise.

But I thought there was supposed to be a price war starting on the 24th of July? And yet they're putting a number of their CPUs to their death bed.

Hi there

Then entire socket 939 single core line up has been axed. They are all now EOL and no longer in production.

AMD X2 S939 will be next to go as AMD are moving all production over to AM2 in order to combat Intel.

I didn't expect socket 939 to be axed so quickly.

In a way, it kind of makes sense now. If the X2 3800+ will drop to £100 on 24th July, then why would anyone consider a 3700+ for around the £110 mark? So I guess they're getting rid of them now and making way for dual core and AM2.
