So tomorrow the 8th of April is the day that MSN will be switched off for most of us.

It was originally meant to be 15th of march but it was delayed.

I still use MSN on a daily basis and i was wondering how many other people still activity use it? And if anybody will miss it, I know i will...

I switched my sons computer (Windows 7) over to Skype several weeks ago, I adjusted the layout to resemble the previous messenger somewhat and it hasn't really changed the way he uses it to talk to relatives.

I was more curious as to how it affects, if at all, the messenger app on Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8? Will these continue to work the same or will these too have to be switched to Skype apps?

Damn, I can't sign into skype as I don't remember my skype password. And there's a bug with the password tokens/temporary codes they give you when you reset your password
It says "Type in the temporary code we emailed you. Then you can enter a new password."

I paste or type it in and it always says "Sorry that password token is not recognized, please try entering it again or get another password token". I've tried 3 different codes. Googling this message shows others with the same issue.
I've got my original password on my desktop pc but that's not assembled at the moment and I'm trying on my laptop. If I download AMSN will that work and import my contacts or must it only be skype? And like Ash-Lee asked above, will my IM+ still work on my phone?

A email that MS sent out a while ago answers all these questions that are being asked:
Hello,

Starting April 8th, we will begin upgrading customers from Messenger to Skype. The process will take a few weeks to complete. April 8th is the first day you may be required to upgrade. This is a bit later than the March 15th date we previously mentioned to some of you as we wanted to give you more time to make the transition.

To keep chatting with your Messenger contacts, simply upgrade to the latest version of Skype using the instructions below and sign in using a Microsoft account (this is the same ID you use to sign into Messenger). Once signed in, your contacts will already be there. You'll be able to instant message and make video calls with them just like before, and start discovering new ways of staying in touch, including Skype on your mobile or tablet.

Upgrade now

Yours sincerely,
The Messenger and Skype Teams

New to Skype?
Get the latest version of Skype.
Sign into Skype with your Microsoft account.
See your Messenger contacts in Skype.

Already have Skype?
Upgrade to the latest version of Skype.
Sign in with your Microsoft account.
Merge your existing Skype account with your Microsoft account.
See your Messenger and Skype contacts in Skype.

Is this happening everywhere?
We are retiring Messenger globally with the exception of mainland China.

What can you get in Skype?
Instant message, share files and contacts; send funny emoticons, access your chat history from virtually anywhere and even send a message to your contacts when they're offline
Instant message, video and audio call from more devices: PC, Mac, Windows Phone, iPhone, iPad, Android mobile, Kindle Fire and other devices
Instant message and video call with your Facebook friends
Group video call with up to ten friends at once*
And that's just the start - there's so much to explore on Skype
Upgrade now

So, what's happening between now and the upgrade?
Messenger will continue to work as you know it today. If you are signed in with Messenger on your Windows and Mac desktops** you will see a banner notification to upgrade. When you click on the banner, an installer window will open with the request to upgrade, this will take you through our installer flow, to install Skype and automatically uninstall Messenger.

So, what's happening after the upgrade?
Messenger users on Windows and Mac desktops** will not be able to sign in and will only be able to upgrade to Skype. If you attempt to sign in, a notification will appear, and if you continue, you will be taken through our installer flow, to install Skype and automatically uninstall Messenger at the same time.

Can I upgrade to Skype on my mobile or tablet?
Yes. Skype is available on iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows Phone 8. While you can still use Messenger on your mobile until a future date, we encourage you to download the latest version of Skype on your mobile or tablet. You will be able to sign into Skype on your iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows Phone 8 mobile apps with your Microsoft account over the next few weeks.

Where can I ask questions or provide feedback?
For more help on upgrading to Skype, please visit the Skype Support site. We would love to hear from you - select the "Give Feedback" link in the Skype Help menu to tell us what you think.

* To get group video, you'll need a Skype Premium subscription. For best quality, we recommend calls with up to five people.
** Newer versions of Messenger will be able to receive the optional upgrade notifications. Older versions will not see the notifications and have to download Skype manually.

So to sum up - Once you sign in to Skype with your MSN log in all your contacts will already be there.

I am not sure about im+ however it does support Skype so i can not see why it wouldn't work.

I spent most of my teenage life sat on MSN, talking to people all over the world 'till the early ours of the morning, I had hundreds of contacts! Now no-one uses it that I know, and the only reason I used it until now is the e-mail notifications which Skype does not do :(

Messenger 7.5 was my personal favourite, along with aPatch :D

R.I.P though :(

Any such patchers out for Skype, like Apatch was for MSN?

Not that I know of :(

I switched over to Skype ages ago when it was first announced about it being retired. To be honest though I hardly use it anymore I just don't have the time these days.

Sort of sad to see it go for nostalgia reasons, but I haven't used it for years.

Its high time Microsoft consolidated their services so I cant really complain now theyre finally doing it. Its the same with hotmail/outlook.com and skydrive. We might lose a few features in the process but hopefully over time they'll get added back.

It makes me wonder what they have planned for the rest of the 'Live' brands - Movie Maker, Writer etc. They would be prime candidates for converting to metro apps.

Won't miss it cos am really anti social when online and can't stand others seeing I'm online and interrupting.

Stopped using it a year or two ago, most people ended up just using Facebook Chat (which is a shame, because even now it's not much good) so it became redundant.

Ah well, I had a good 10 years with it.

Interrupting what??... Seconds thoughts i don't want to know. lol

I still lightly use MSN. I use it with the Windows 8 messenger app, i guess that will become redundant when they turn it off? Or will the messenger app cover Skype messenger too?

The Skype app for Windows 8 is poop.

Hey guys, can anyone suggest a fix here. When I log into skype, the message box loads but then disappears, with a message from soluto saying skype crashed. Also if I click on sign out or quit skype from the start menu, it doesn't do anything. But a mate let me test skype by giving me his login details. When I logged in with his details, it doesn't crash. Seems to be some problem with my MSN login details. Yet my MSN login works ok as I can use windows live messenger and it allows me to sign in to MSN outlook

Yeah the app on Windows 8 is terrible, I just downloaded the desktop version & use that instead.

Moved over from MSN early last month, I prefer the MSN client when it has been apatched compared to Skype but I'll get used to it.
