I currently have an asus X470-f AM4 socket MB with a 2700X and am looking to upgrade and am undecided on amd or intel so i have a question if i was to stick with the AM4 socket and upgrade to say a 3800x will there be a next gen of release of chips from amd ( say 4***x series ) that will work with the AM4 socket or will the next gen of amd chips be on a new socket.

Thanks all for the fast replies, got to love this forum :)
i assume the step between the 2000>>3000 series will be around the step that we can assume will be between the 3000>>>4000 ??

no real point going to a 3800 from your chip. wait a year or two upgrade the lot. some four series boards have issues with current amd cpus.never mind the next lot. saves headaches.
My problem is that i mostly just use the PC for playing Sim games , with the main one being iRacing which unfortunately is single core dependant , and atm with my 2700x overclocked i am still getting frame drops in VR , ( GPU is a 1080ti ) , so i need to increase my HTz of my cpu. hense me thinking on going to intel again.

if thats all your soley playing get something like a 9700k nothing amd wise is going to perform the same and keep the same high fps . people will tell you it will but it wont in reality.

i guess it comes down to if you want value or performance. also how much youd gain.
This is what i am thinking , though personally i don't think i'll get the 9900k as its just to expensive , so i'm torn between i5-9500k , i7-9700k , i7-8700k , or would i be better of getting the i7-9700KF ( do these overclock better that the 9700K ?? , as i will be overclocking the cpu )

'Could' wait for the 9900KS to drop to see if this lowers 9900k prices but the KS's will drop from the back of a rocking horse. So probably wont see a big change in prices.

As for 9900k being quickest, at 720p and 1080p with a 2080ti = Yes quickest.

Any higher resolution than above, next to no difference or a lesser gfx card than the above again, next to no difference. If you already have an AM4 board, then to go intel you'll need to factor in the cost of a new MOBO and decent cooling option. Either get a 2nd hand 3000 series when they become more available or jump on 4000 series when it comes out.
my GPU is a 1080ti and i game using VR ( hp reverb - incoming ) , as for intel cooling my current cooler ( h100i ) will do the 1151 socket as well as it came with the adaptor plate.

@joedeath332 has already said he considered buying a 8700K, 9700K or 9500K so he is not looking at second hand or low budget CPU's. He is gaming on a 1080TI using VR so the last thing he wants to do is pair that with a dual core CPU, no matter if it can run at 5Gz.
Yip I deffo want a 9700k min I would say, unless I Ofc skip the 9 series and wait for the 10th gen, as atm I have to buy a mb anyways,
Due to iRacing being single core dependant I'll need a cpu that will have a high clock speed, as well as having other cores to run windows, browsers, sim commander discord etc.

surely though the point is that while intel may arguably be better in this particular instance, he already has the x470 board...

All he needs to do is drop in a 3XXX processor and get a fair bump in both IPC and clock. For any intel option he needs at least a new motherboard too.

After featuring in the sale of the 2700X, a 3700X would be a relatively cost effective and straight forward to achieve 10-15% bump in single core performance over his 2700X. Furthermore by staying with the X470 he then also has the option of a further simple drop in upgrade to the eg 4700X when it comes out sometime next year.

I know I know I know, I hear what you are saying about the 3700x / 4700x, the single core power is just not enough for me in iRacing with the VR, as even with my 2700x clocked to 4.3 I'm still seeing 1 core max out in resource manager when playing iRacing.
Mind u if I did stick with AMD dropped in a 3700x or 3800x and overclocked it, what ram would I be best to get so that I could get the most speed out of the system.
Atm I have 16GB (2x8GB) Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX Black, PC4-24000 (3000), Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 15-17-17-35, XMP 2.0, 1.35V

If you are targeting your build for a specific game (not something I would normally advise) then in your position I would advise the 9700K is best for you. You probably want to stay away from any kind of HT/SMT chip as what you will find is that the scheduler will often select a 'fake core' and then performance will drop. This will be especially true of poorly optimised games like iRacing.
Sorry I missed this when you posted it Martin, that is very interesting about HT, so the 9700k looks even more stronger, plus I was reading about the 10 series from Intel and I'm sure I read the whole range will have HT.
Sure if I got the 9700k that gives me loads of single core grunt, as well as giving me 8 physical cores.

Yes, I've long since known and experienced that HT can be a hindrance in a few programs/games. When Intel decided in their wisdom/greed to drop it from their i7 line I was one of the few that was quite happy as it suited me better. Plus I had a notion that CPU's would overclock better as historically if you wanted to increase your maximum overclock then disabling HT would help.

For you I'd say the 3000 series just falls short compared to a 9700K in single thread performance and once you put a decent overclock on it then the gap widens. I have both systems so know this all too well.
Thanks once again for the info, I'm positive that from a financial point of view the Ryzen would be the way to go, but going on my gut instinct the i9 9700k is the way for me to go.. Decisions decisions

I've just googled a comparison between the 2700x and the 3600 with a 2080 ( my card is a 1080ti )
and tbh the difference is marginal according to that video
Is the video accurate ??

Hey, your money - you can do whatever you like at the end of the day, I'm not your wife lol.

Personally if I was in your position I'd probably go the 3600(x?) route for as mentioned about 80 quid maybe after selling your 2700x, then get the Zen 3 version when it comes out too... all in maybe £150-200 over the next year and you'll have maxed out the AM4 socket (well in terms of single core, there's always the option for a bigger chip like a theoretical 4950x), then once that doesn't do the job well enough anymore you can change to a whole new platform (be it intel or AMD) with DDR5 and PCIe5 to boot.

Your ram is fine imo - you would get a bit better performance by switching to some 3600mhz but I'm not convinced the gains would be worth it compared to the outlay.
i'm tending to think ill maybe see if i can adjust the settings on the only game that i have probs with in VR and that is iRacing and get by until Zen 3 , saying i already have the MB and Ram.
Is there any idea when Zen 3 will hit the UK

That would certainly be a better choice imo if you can wait...

Personally I just don’t really see the value proposition of changing what is still a current platform at the moment unless you are really deeply unhappy with it. Zen3 will be a drop in upgrade and after that a platform change (be it to intel or AMD) will net you more in terms of DDR5, pcie 5.0 and no doubt better usb/networking spec etc.
Yip I think that is what I will be doing after all, and put my current budget back into the upgrade Jar.
