End of socket AM4

Chaps if the 4000 series chips are the last offering for the AM4 chipset, is there any reason why I shouldn't wait for that as a drop in upgrade on my X370 Prime Pro? It will be my last best option without having to change mobo so would be keen on making the most out of that...

Depends how desperate you are for an upgrade.

They "should" work on X370, but it's never a given. There's no harm in waiting to find out if you aren't particularly desperate.

I did the same, but went from 1st gen to 3rd gen in an X370, hopefully motherboard vendors will support the X370 platform with BIOS updates come the 4000 series release, although I'll probably skip 4000 and upgrade come AM5, as by then my X370 will have served me well.

That would certainly be a better choice imo if you can wait...

Personally I just don’t really see the value proposition of changing what is still a current platform at the moment unless you are really deeply unhappy with it. Zen3 will be a drop in upgrade and after that a platform change (be it to intel or AMD) will net you more in terms of DDR5, pcie 5.0 and no doubt better usb/networking spec etc.
Yip I think that is what I will be doing after all, and put my current budget back into the upgrade Jar.
