Just because he was good decades ago and made massively good strides for the sport.
Does not mean he hasn't gone senile and damaging the sport in more recent times. Because he did good before doesn't mean he always has.
 
The problem is people believing that what Bernie says he wants is actually what he is aiming to get.

He suggests over the top things because he knows there will be a compromise. Then when there is a compromise the other party feels like the won, while Bernie still gets what he wants.

Where he has lacked recently is in understanding the fan base and the environment they live in. The "show" of F1 is suffering and Bernie is not the guy to solve that.
