NEW YORK (AP) — Microsoft will end support for the persistently popular Windows XP on Tuesday, and the move could put everything from the operations of heavy industry to the identities of everyday people in danger.

This bit raised a smile,

Mike Eldridge, 39, of Spring Lake, Mich., says that since his computer is currently on its last legs, he's going to cross his fingers and hope for the best until it finally dies.

"I am worried about security threats, but I'd rather have my identity stolen than put up with Windows 8," he says.

I have to agree with Mr Eldridge as I wouldn't touch win 8 with a barge pole. I just wish Steam OS gets a move on.

That does raise a smile with Mr Eldridge, but unfortunately (as much as some on here specifically would not care to admit), it seems to be a popular view out in the real world.

I do hope some of the patches released for private support (ie UK Government) find their way onto the public domain. It will be useful for those still running XP to be able to update in some form.

Windows 8.11 is also due out today isn't it? Looking forward to installing that on my secondary home PC, currently running Windows 8.1, which is fine, but I do like some of the new tweaks.

I see windows 7's growth was 4 times that of win 8\8.1 last month. Time to close the door on win 8.

Who cares since they all get phased out eventually ie XP,Win7,Win8,I do wish people would move on rather then clinging on to outdated and phased out OS.

I'm ready for Win9 already as much as I like Win8.1 etc...

You could not pay me to go back to XP,Linux is even 100x better then XP (I replaced my old XP with Linux Mint best thing I did ):D .

XP RIP LONG OVERDUE.

My security essentials has a big red cross on it this morning on XP even though it will continue to receive updates until 2015!

The end of life for windows XP has actually prompted me to finally sort out a Windows 7 upgrade. I was already looking at it after the latest version of lightroom and few other things I use dropped XP support and the security issue has finally given me enough reason to get on with it.

Plus it will be my first significant hardware upgrade since the great Opteron craze of 2005!

Win7 will be the next XP. It's a mature OS, which is perfect for enterprise.

Just gone back to W7 Professional x64. It's perfect tbh, everything just works. It's fast and fluid. No annoying Metro, 'Apps' or 'Charms'.. I mean really Apps? Charms.. Way to copy apple and alienate your original typical desktop PC user. They changed what made a PC a PC. I want my desktop to be a desktop not a tablet. MS do seem to be going in the right direction now and listening to their actual user market, but W8 just isn't there yet..

Going to use Windows 7 up until Windows 9. If that is also a bit pants I'll stick with 7 for the long haul.. By then Linux / SteamOS might a viable option for more than just a handful of games..

Totally agree but it could be even worse at least at the minute I have the option of jumping to the supported windows 7 which is a very similar environment and one I like. When 7 dies we will be forced to 8 or 9 which unless Microsoft takes a radical turn will be a horrible unfriendly tablet esque affair that is horrible for desktop use.

It is about time it is completely killed off.

I hope not, I hope the people who cling on to XP get royally screwed over for supporting an OS that is so out of date. The typical home user should be away from XP now no excuses.

I was thinking about this earlier today.
If XP users install an antivirus (or even use MSE, as the updates will continue to be available, won't they?), and a non-MS browser, how insecure are they likely to be?

For awhile MSE wise,

Even Microsoft’s own Microsoft Security Essentials will support Windows XP until July 14, 2015. Antivirus-testing company AV-TEST asked 30 different antivirus companies about their plans for Windows XP support and all of them committed to support Windows XP until at least April 8, 2015. Most committed to supporting it for even longer, into at least 2016.

They should really upgrade to a newer Windows OS or one of the many free Linux distros like Mint,Ubuntu etc...

I get that Windows 8 has some issues that many don't like, but seriously? XP is an 11 year old OS, and feels like it, at least upgrade to 7. I never understood the love for that OS with it's tacky Fisher Price buttons and slow performance. Get with the times people!

Says it all about people that make statements like that, they should stay away from PCs in general let alone an OS that has improved security etc...

Gotta agree there, with respect to Windows. I like Windows 8 for the touchscreen games (Bejeweled-type games on 27" is epic!), but there is nothing stopping you from using the desktop interface. I still use desktop apps e.g. Office and the experience is similar to Windows 7, and I still play desktop games, Steam etc. The one main thing I can't embrace however are the latest Offices (2007/10/13). I've spent hours on it providing desktop support but I could never get my head around the 'ribbon' interface. Funny that, because Firefox's interface has changed massively too over the years and I'm fine with that.

As for XP, we (as an NHS Trust) still use XP on our 6,000-odd machines. What I don't understand is why some clinical staff gets given iPads, when the money could have been spent on rolling out Windows 7 or 8. I'm just an admin monkey though, so I get no say in IT decisions.

Windows 8 is for the kids that are coming to PCs...Oh look my pc now looks like my Xbox and my moms phone.. god help us :(

Do you really believe that statement?..Seriously Win8 was Microsoft's very first attempt to release a hybrid OS,I expect it will continue to evolve in Win9,10 etc,GUI may change again and again down the road.
