Hi all,

Looking to buy the book from which the film was based, but confused as to all the options?

Is the book from which the film was based the first in the series, if not where does it all start, and also, are the other books worth a read?

Does anyone have a list of the order I should be reading them and how many in total?

Cheers :)

From Orson Scott website (although there are more novels since this was done!)

Question: What's the "preferred" order of reading the Ender series?
Answer:

Preferred order ... depends on what you mean by preferred, and who's doing the preferring.

You can read them in the order written - Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, Children of the Mind, then Ender's Shadow, Shadow of the Hegemon, Shadow Puppets, Shadow of the Giant. Or you can read them in chronological order of story beginnings, which is Ender's Shadow, Ender's Game, Shadow of the Hegemon, Shadow Puppets, Shadow of the Giant, Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, Children of the Mind.

But in truth it doesn't matter, except that you should read Xenocide right before Children of the Mind, since they are really two halves of a single continuous story. In most of my books, I include all the information you need.

Excellent thanks, I'll have a mooch over to his site, didn't realize he had one.

Also, there are more books in the series that aren't listed above?

Read them in the original published order (the first that Windle lists). The "Shadow" books are essentially an alternate look at some of the same events, plus filling in gaps in part of the original series. As such, it works better to read them after the first series, rather than interleaved chronologically.

Excellent thanks, think I'll just start with Ender's Game. Really enjoyed the movie and heard the book is even better?

Thanks chaps :)
