Hey,

So my GF after watching a few YouTube videos wants me to try this out to see if it is something that she'd enjoy.... don't ask for any more details :p

It is something I have wanted to try for a long time but living in the South I know there isn't as much choice as further afield like Wales, and The North.

Any tips on such things? I've found a few places (non-local to me) that offer half day taster sessions but not really knowing much about Motocross or the bikes anything I should know?

If I did enjoy it I know that I'd need new a helmet, boots, gear etc but first things first what bike is good for a beginner?

Earlier this year I went on the Mick Extance Enduro Day in North Wales, at the time I had my road licence less than a year, and no experience off road at all. He caters to all experience levels, so I thought "why not".

Had a cracking day, learnt an awful lot and really enjoyed being out on the Honda CRF250F (I think). All kit was supplied, and you even get lunch!

Things to know include,

- You will fall off, but it won't hurt too much
- If in doubt, pin the throttle and stare up the hill
- Get used to sliding both wheels all over the place
- Rev the snot out of it
- It will improve your road riding!
- Your rear end will hurt, and you will be very tired !

Its great fun, I say get stuck in!

that seems like the best advice. go for a taster session on a fairly tame enduro type bike and see how it goes. have you got plenty of by-ways near you? consider also that most green lanes are closed to vehicles between October and april as well.

I want to do an off road experience day at some point, partly because it looks great fun and will improve my road bike handling, and because I'll probably buy a KTM 990 adventure when I replace the CB400 :D There's loads of gravel roads in the Alps I want to ride.

I reckon the only real other kit you need unless you're doing serious off road is a pair off boots, something with more protection (in case the bike falls on you) and a grippier sole.

Boots are a must, can't stress this, I've come off many many many times and had the exhaust fall on my leg, fallen on rocks, had my foot pinned under the bike... good MX/Enduro boots saved me every time.

Handguards, hitting trees hurts and falling over and losing a clutch lever isn't much fun.

Obviously my bikes aren't enduro but that's how they get used, trails and hillclimbs, jumps etc.

Don't get a heavy bike!

It's extremely tiring but the best workout you'll ever have.

*Edit* Oh and if in doubt... full throttle... trust me!

In my 20s I used current road bike a cx500 plastic maggot on the sand dunes at wooten woods in Norfolk m8 was on a GS550 and the other on an XT500 the warden chased us off :D

lots of places where I live.

Just go buy an old nail and go for it.
