Enemy Territory replacement?

For a couple of years I've enjoyed playing ET on my laptop, partly because it's a great game and partly because it's about the only one that runs really well! Now I've upgraded my rig to something nice and powerful (7900GT, etc etc) I'm wanting to have a bash at some of the latest games that are out there.

But what, if anything, is closest to how ET plays when online?

With ET I much prefer to play a support role and co-ordinate a team rather than run around and shoot everything in sight. Sure I can hit a few headshots if I need to, but I'm usually the Medic that's keeping everyone topped-up or the Field Ops that is keeping them in ammo. What I really like about ET is the fact that you have to use a mixture of all the character classes to win a map and you can't simply win (well, unless you defend) by killing everyone on the other side, over and over again.

Battlefield 2 has been recommended to me as the closest thing to ET in terms of structure - how accurate would you say that statement is?

I'd say BF2 was pretty close to ET and in many ways better due to the more structured squad/commander system. I know ET had the fireteams, but the squad system on BF2 works really well - when the rest of your teams aren't retards.

You can win rounds on BF2 by going round killing everything, same as a lone engie could win most of the maps on ET, but when the game is played properly the medic/support roles come in very handy and a good mix of classes is essential in the team/squads.

I'd say that BF2 was the closest thing I've played to ET, but it's not the same - you don't have specific objectives where you have to escort a tank, steal the gold and escape with it, it's just holding and capturing flags, which may sound simple/boring but it works a lot better when you're actually playing it.

Okay, that sounds pretty promising.

As you say, much of it sounds down to the qualities of your teammates (I've lost count of the times I'm the only person going for the objective and not running around shooting everything) but I like the idea of the squad system - is it more rigidly enforced that with ET or is it again something that is down to the players to control?

Isn't RO more of a deathmtach type affair? I wasn't aware it has different character classes that all had specialised skills.

On Steam now though? Last time I checked it was still a UT2K4 total conversion!

It is entirely up to the player whether they join a squad or not, but most people do, especially on the more organised servers, e.g. =50k= and a fair few others.

Not to forget Enemy Territoy: Quake Wars which should be coming out sometime this year. Its made by Splash Damage, the team behind the original W:ET, so it should be pretty similar - only set in the Quake world.

As for current games, I would agree BF2 is the one to go for. Thats the one I migrated to from W:ET and had a damn good time on it. As Phil says, there are no set objectives like blowing up fuel dumps etc, but you soon get into the swing of the game.

I don't think there is any current came thats has a direct comparison to W:ET. I'm not sure what to think about ET:QW... but I did love W:ET, so hopefully this will be as good.

BF2 is a good game but i'd have to say I don't think it'll be much of a replacement.

I really enjoyed having objectives in ET, the rather boring and pointless (besides lowering tickets quicker) flag capping in battlefield doesn't make it half as interesting.

i know UT2004 has been about for ages, but it still looks good, runs well and has some interesting game types, onslaught and assault being the best in my opinion, they give you more purpose that just trying to kill stuff and tend to filter the action into hotspots as opposed to it being spread over a vast map (tho some are pretty huge in UT). thinking of that... i'm off to reinstall it. ta ta. :D

Thanks for all the replies, I might be tempted to give BF2 a go if I can get a cheap copy, but from the comments it would seem that ET is still king - at least for the way I like to play. I like the sound of BF2 but the flag affair doesn't really get me excited in the same way that the building/destroying/capturing/escorting does in ET. I'll probably still end up giving it a go though!

One question: if I was to buy a second-hand copy of BF2, is there anything I need to look out for? Can CD keys be blocked, thus rendering the game useless?

KraniX; I'd forgotten all about UT2K4! You've just reminded me I've got a copy lying around - good work, fella!

et aint as strong as it used to be but still out with loads of new maps to spice things up

look out for sircliffrichard - he is normally noobing around some of the easier public servers.

as for RO - i just cant get into it! played it a bit now and really wanted it to work as i love ET but just cant do it. some of the maps are huge and u take forever to run around unless the tanks etc are not damaged. just get a bit bored and therefore frusted every time u get picked off at distance and its back to the spawn point...

et you can pick it up play it and then come back for more anytime and you are straight back in the saddle. new maps are getting so good now with some real great textures and "storylines" that it is hard to see how it is free!!!!

oh well - i expect that you have noticed i love the game

:)

deff dont try BF2, thats right DON'T!

bf2 is nothing compared to ET, in BF2 its all about yourself theres virtually no team effort in the game at all, thisis blatantly obvious by *** fact every1 races for vehicles and often takes them without letting any1 else in them, and if u get ina vehicle most ppl will generally shoot it cause they didn't get in.

medics never revive as theres no incentive to do it and same with ammo, basically it all comes down to the community, BF2 is full of kids who just like killing stuff and driving around. ET from what i no of it is a lot more mature and actually uses the teamplay to win, which made it so cool.

also the BF2 maps are all crap there the same objective but differnerent enviroment, unlike ET's which actually have a story to them.

I disagree.

Sure you'll get loads of people running around on BF2 going for the vehicles, but ET had it's share of smacktards when it was in its prime.

Go on servers like =50k= and other clan servers and it's a completely different game compared to public servers.

I've very rarely had a problem with people giving out health/ammo - many people constantly give out the packs as it gets them so many easy points!

Funnily enough the only game that I would put in the same group as ET is Battlefield. Definitely give it a go.

ET for me was better because I love WWII and the weapons. And if you got on a decent server with a team that played well together it was brilliant. For the guys still playing ET - is it still as popular and are there still good servers about? :)

BF2 is a good game but I feel its gonna be replaced soon as Quake Wars releases....

The classes/weapons are almost identical its very scary...

And im glad but its quite possible QuakeWars might not be good only time will tell.

I've had about a month off, but I was using a list of about 6 servers all running ET Pro and using a core of the main maps with a few additional ones tagged on (Venice, Caen, etc). If you get a good squad together it can be quite interesting.

=[2D]= used to be my fave though: 81.27.99.18:27960

Only gets switched on at the weekends, but it's usually full of people who want to play tactically.

PS. If anyone does still play ET and wants to try and get a regular session going with some names from OcUK, shout em out and we'll see if we can find a time and place.
