Hey guys, our past 2 electricity bills have been gone up by considerable amounts, and we cannot think of anything we've done that could justify such a big change in the bill. This is before we have turned the heating on for the winter.

Is there any way to tell what rooms or devises in the house are causing to generate that amount of electricity? Anything I can do that can explain the bill being so much higher?

Cheers

If you are with British Gas they will give you an energy monitor.. it's the "energy smart" tariff. You can hook the little monitor up to electrical items and it tells you pound for pound how much you are using.

yes ,the wireless monitor works for us ,just one look and we have an idea whats going on i.e at the moment we are drawing 180 watts ,thats tv set top box ,router laptop and external screen ,we get this to zero in the day ,or 80 when the fridge motor kicks in ,you get a feel for it ,sad maybe ,butl its helped us pay off the mortgage early

Anything that creates heat (hairdryer, electric shower, heaters, tumble dryer etc) will have the biggest impact. Things like lightbulbs or leaving the PC on won't have a particularly noticeable effect.

Get an energy monitor and actually see for yourself, they are easy to install and easy to work out exactly whats sucking you dry.

I know that my house costs about 1.8p an hour to run while we are asleep. i know what things use a bit more juice than others.

Invariably its one thing using more than it should but its possible that its a whole bunch of stuff adding up.

We got the Owl energy Monitor and it works a treat.

You could get an energy meter on eBay. Mine was about £10 delivered. It's probably not perfect but it's close enough for what I need it for.
