Hiya guys n girls.

Firstly my apologies... for those reading this, its probably simple, for me, im not as young as I was lol, things have changed, its been 5 yrs since my last build and I just want to get it right with no mistakes

Ok I need to know about all the different plugs on this damm PSU!

ENERMAX REVOLUTION 1050W

1) Please look at the photo below..... this is the P5Q MoBo from Asus, top left there is a white plug, but part of it has a black bung in it.. to the foreground and left a little is the plug im assuming goes into the Mobo.

Now do I remove the black bung to allow fitting, why is it bunged in the first place lol currently i dont have a plug that fits im sure :)

2) The GFX Card in the Tower is a Sapphire 4870 x2 and there are two sockets for power (I ASSUME you need to have BOTH in use?? as the manual that comes with this card has NO explaination of what the power requirements are or what your suppose to plug into it!)

Now, there are two leads again that come with the GFX card (These are on the LEFT of the picture) but also there are leads that come with the PSU and also the PSU itself has these connectors (These are on the RIGHT of the pictures) but im a little confused as the ones on the PSU (Also the extension cables) have 6 pin and then a two pin. am I right in assuming that
A) you need to have BOTH sockets powered
and that
B) you use the 6pin+2pin as an 8 pin plug?

Lastly the PSU as I said comes with the main Mobo 12 pin connector, the ones above I assume that you use for the GFX card, and a comple of others, but there are LOADS of plug in cables to that plug directly into the PSU

Is it better to use the additional plug in ones, or if they are there and exist (GFX CARD power plugs for instance) use the ones that are hard wired into the PSU?

Very confusing for a total noobie lol so please be gentle with me! I only want to learn :)

Normally on the PSU plugs it has written what they are for such as the graphics card plugs will have PCI-E and yes you will definately have to use both the plugs on the gfx card...

As for the motherboard the 4 or 8 pin plugs changes the voltage, it should tell you in your motherboard manual which to use under what circumstances..

If it does not have it written on the PSU plugs then look at the shape of the adapters each pin socket is either rounded or squared in different configurations for mobo and gfx card make sure you have the matching shaped plugs..

I would double check all the documentation that came with the gfx card somewhere it should be listed about the PSU connectors..

Hi first picture remove the plastic plug and use the 8 pin, you can use 4 pin but I tend to use 8.

For the GPU I would use the PSU plugs and you will need to install in both ports ( I think 6 pin & 8 pin)

thanks guys, so those 6+ pin plugs do go together to form the 8pin plug then?

I did double check the THIN booklet for the GFX card, and no, no explaination of the power requirments or plug connectors, only how to remove old card and insert new, which I knew anyways :)

yes they do, its just so you can use them as either, since cards come with a combination of
no external power
1 x 6 pin
2 x 6 pin
1 x 8 pin and 1 x 6 pin
2 x 8 pin

afaik

Ahhh ok :)

Well I just relooked in the Mobo manual, and I found a paragraph which says remove the black bung and insert an 8pin 12v plug  lol missed that one :)

Thanks for the help, sincerely appreciated!
