Looked at a new shape Honda CRV which is 2.5 years old from a Honda dealer today. 2.2 DTEC with 28k miles, very clean bodywork and interior but when I flipped the bonnet it was dirtier than my 8 year old Civic.

Looked like it had sand in it and a lot of the bolts, etc were very rusty.

Now I know it's supposed to be a 4x4 but we all know CRV's aren't bought for that kind of thing. Am I being picky? Would you expect that from a car that old?

was always told to be wary of a clean engine bay as the owner has something to hide.

2.5 years old from a main dealer, shirly there is warranty to speak of?

Yes there's the one year Honda warranty, they're trying to sell me the 2 years extended for £599 but I've not decided yet (in addition to the 2 years service £440, paint & interior protection £299 and Lifeshine £299 )

I was just not expecting such a messy engine bay on a vehicle this old, especially from the main dealers.

When I lived in South Africa you could always spot an engine bay that's lived near the coast as they'd be falling apart. Loads of people hose their cars down on weekends to prevent the salt chewing up the bodywork but often neglected the engine bay. This meant cars that were all spangly on the outside but falling to bits under the bonnet.

Don't know where this car has lived but if it's been near the coast somewhere, this might be worth taking into consideration.
