Is there any downside or issues with having a dirty engine other that the way it looks. I always mean to do mine but the bonnet only gets opened when something needs doing under there and I thing CBA

Mine got done after taking it into a car valet place and it came up beautiful like the engine bays above. Nothing bad came from it, I think this whole 'It will blow up your engine!!' stuff is just people being over cautious because I've had it done on a few cars i've owned now and nothing bad comes of it

Adds so much value come resell time believe me.

Looks is the primary reason. Secondary would be the ease of finding leaks and the cleanliness when trying to fix / maintain anything under there.

It's rather pointless on any of my cars as I live on a dirt road and for 6 months of the year you spray water out of a hose pipe and it'll either freeze on contact, or alrady be frozen before it hits :eek:

Id say its definatly worth it for if you are gonna sell very soon, as a super clean engine bay makes the car look well maintained etc.

Quick question why does the plastic cover say 1.6 SR?!

When my dad has a 1.6 Audi A3 it just said 1.6.

Yeah, I only done it for cosmetic reasons, just couldn't bare having such a dirty engine.

oweneades, not quite sure why it says 1.6 SR to be honest.

Mine is an "SR" too, refers to the engine type as they made an "S" version also which has a different sump I believe (I was asked when I replaced my sump).

Super clean engine bay usually makes me think they've just cleaned away all the oil which was ******* out of it before...

Certainly means that with HGV's!

After costing myself a few quid after I steamed the engine on my old 318i, I hav'nt touched the engine in my 728, I even went to the point of insisting the dealer did'nt touch the engine bay when i bought the car.

Far to many stories of woe & big expense on e38 7 Series forums that I've read for me to even consider it!

, although it looks clean, infact the above engine is quite dusty, water not allowed.
