Hi guys,

Was driving to work this morning and the oil light flickered on  SOooo I left it a couple of hours and check the oil. It was just above minimum so I got a mate to drop me to get some oil on my lunch break. Problem sorted... or was it.

As I was driving home I noticed a dodgy noise from the engine, I pulled over and it was rattling like crazy! I crawled home (crap idea I KNOW).

I've asked a couple of mates (mechanics) and they've said the oil pump has a habit of going on my model.

It's a 2001 mk4 astra 1.7 dti... My cousin has had a listen and he seems to think the top end might of gone.

Any ideas guys? I'm gutted, really dont have the money to fix this right now. :(

The top end will rattle if there's no oil up there. Have you still got the oil pressure light on? Pump sounds goosed IMO, especially if you have oil in there. :)

Sorry forgot some info!

The oil light stays on at low revs (below say 2k) and it's idling pretty rough. The oil dipstick is reading just below the max line.

Yep, oil pump is knackered if it can't hold oil pressure at idle. The rattling you can hear is probably the pump itself. You can get a new one at the motorfactors and replace it yourself. It's not a hard job usually, just very messy. Don't drive it too far if you can.

It'll probably be ok as long as you change it at the soonest opportunity.

Thanks Jonny! Lets hope this is the case! Had to drive it about 5 miles home unfortunately. Kept it the revs as low as possible though. So could just be the pump, if it was left too long it'd cause a lot more damage I'm guessing?

How much would just the oil pump cost? .. and if it has been left too long what sort of price / thing could go wrong?

Sorry for the questions, gutted and want to know as much as possible before I go to the garage (not sure i'd want to replace the pump myself).

My 02 Astra had a burning smell coming from the engine and was noisy, the oil light didn't come on though, turned out if i hadn't had it stopped it when i did and had it towed to the stealership, it would have thrown the cambelt.

I think that turned out to be the oil pump only had just over 50k on it as well.

Let's hope the cambelt doesn't need doing as well!!!! May as well buy a new car at this rate :p

Just want some ideas before I head to the garage, want to know roughly what to tell the guy and what to expect.

Damagewise, don't quote me on this one, but fingers crossed it's probably fine. Second thoughts on the rattling might be the hydraulic lifters. They pump up with oil so you don't have to do the valve clearances like on old engines. With not enough oil pressure they don't pump up fully so make the valves sound all clattery. As soon as you put on a new pump they should fill up properly and hopefully the noise will go away.

I think oil pumps are about £50? Anyone?

Might be as simple as a sticking relief valve. As for oil pump price, I would check with a Vauxhall stealer. Some of the vauxhall pumps cost a fortune, I had to sit down when I got a pice from my Astra GTE many years back.

Ones for my engine cost nigh on 160 notes  , mind you this is renault we are talking about, thankfully they arent a common failure either.

Mmm, astra GTE!!

I'll try and book it into a garage tomorrow. There's a local guy who does most of my familys stuff pretty cheap. Not sure if he'll have much knowledge on this but we'll see! Thanks for the replies guys, gives me a rough idea of what's going on.

tut at you not checking your oil regularly.lets hope you aint paid the price.most likely a top end rattle as thats the first part that gets starved of oil but thankfully its a lot hardier than your bottom end being starved of oil cos once your mains start making noises you know it aint gonna be cheap!
probably is either an oil pump of the chain has come of it although the oil light would be on all the time.wont cost you lots for the part its the labour involved thats the sting as you also have to do an oil change at same time.

astra gte mmmm? wft they are one of the worst handling cars ever made :D
