Hi all,

I have a B6 passat 57 2.0TDI(sport) and have a worrying problem.

Recently, the 'Engine Fault Garage' message appears on the dash reguarly and does not allow me to start the car. However taking key out then inserting again does allow me to start as normal. I had the injectors replaced via the recall late last year.

Any ideas what the problem could be?

Not sure if I should take to VW for diagnostics or just a regular indy?

The fact that taking the key out and putting it back in suggests it could be a key, key reader, immobiliser problem. A regular indy should be able to sort that.
Have you tried a spare key?

personally i'd find a vw specialist as it could involve various control modules so best taking it to someone that should have the proper diagnostics rather than a all in one shot

but do try the spare key first :) but it really could be a multitude of things from the ignition switch to immobiliser units to the actual key itself.

that said this does ring bells, i'm sure a couple of the guys in our vw owners club had issues like this and it was down to the steering columms themselves iirc

just had a quick check with one of the guys via chat re the steering columm issue, its a common thing and lots of the guys have had new columms fitted under warranty and goodwill from vw. if it is the columm they should cover the cost (thankfully as its north of a grand otherwise) if its not the columm it could be anyone of a dozen issues as mentioned above

Got it booked in for tomorrow, got quick q thought, the message doesnt popup all the time, its not came up today, but it did a few times yesterday, so the fault should be saved somewhere is that correct?

Also, I see vagcom cables etc on the bay for pretty cheap, is it worth picking one up and checking future faults myself?

yeah, the cables are cheap and the software is free. just add a laptop.

it will be saved on the ecu along with any other faults

the circumstances that cause the warning to arrise may give an indication what it is

Well what happens sometimes is that I try to start the car and it seems to whirr along-with the fault appearing on dash. However if i remove key and start it tends to start as normal.

Hey all,

So quick update to the problem, it seems to be more regular now, what happens in particular is:

1. Attempt to start
2. It attempts to turn over then Engine Fault Garage appears on dash
3. Yellow coil light flashes as in image below
4. When I take key out then put it back in it sometimes starts or might need me to take out again then put it in again
5. Then when it starts it runs as normal.

I took it to the local garage yesterday and the code they said comes up is : P1570.

Any further ideas-does the flashing yellow light mean anything special?

Code P1570 is an immobiliser code.

Has a probable cause of "Incorrect/damaged key, incorrectly coded, ECM/immobilizer replacement without coding, wiring, immobilizer defective"

It was asked earlier, have you tried the spare key ? Also does the engine start and then cut out ?

From Ross-Tech's page for the fault code (link already posted a few posts above) :-

17978/P1570/005488 - Engine Start Blocked by Immobilizer

Possible Symptoms
Engine starting but stalling immediately

Possible Causes
Key(s) not matched
Instrument Cluster not matched
Engine Control Unit (ECU) not matched
Engine Control Unit (ECU) Power Supply faulty

Possible Solutions
Check for Fault Codes in Immobilizer itself (part of Instrument Cluster in many cars, but separate Immobilizer Control Module in some)
Check Immobilizer Measuring Values (usually in Instrument Cluster OR Immobilizer Control Module)
Match Key(s)/Instrument Cluster/Engine Control Unit (ECU)
Check Engine Control Unit (ECU) Power Supply (Relay)

Special Notes
In case of Engine Starting Issues please make sure that you are really experience an Immobilizer related Problem! Even if the Immobilizer engages, the Engine will still start fine but cut out after 2-3 Seconds. If you are NOT experiencing this behavior (e.g. Engine doesn't start at all) your Problem is very likely NOT Immobilizer related.
May be stored in Combination with 01176 - Key: Signal too Low in Immobilizer Control Module.
If no other immobilizer related fault codes are stored and the immobilizer related meas. blocks are fine except Engine Start not allowed, in rare occasions it helps to try cold-booting the car. Remove both battery cables from the battery. Short the battery cables together (away from the battery) for about 15 seconds. Reconnect the battery. (Example)
