Right, i'm stumped.

Put the engine in, went to turn it over, one click and nothing. checked the battery, fine.

Starter I think, So I turn the crank bolt to free it. It turns a bit the makes some metallic banging noise. At this point I'm worried. I instantly think cam timing, but I made sure that was right when I put the belt on, Ie turned it over about 10 times by hand, all was fine.

So that should also eliminate seizure. So I go back to the starter, I take it out and try and turn with the crank bolt, wont budge, I can move it about 5 degrees each way.. odd.

So it's not the starter. not the timing and not the battery. Err what else can it be.

Thinking back though after I put the gearbox on i could no longer turn the engine via the crank bolt after that, I thought the box was in gear though so didn't think anything of it!

As i understand it, if the clutch components aren't aligned the box won't go on, so that must be fine (did it by eye). But is it possible I've put the clutch plates on the wrong way or something? I also can't get it in reverse, I've not messed with the linkage, just took it off and on (box end)

I can't even push the car back in neutral or anything, it's just like something is physically stopping it! Any of this make sense?

thanks.

You missed an engine earth I bet.

No earth path for the starter = no starter

Edit: You sure it's in neutral? Handbrake etc no stuck on?

all earths there mate, when I very 1st started the car it turned about a quarter or stopped then it just clicked.

I used the crank bolt to turn it then turned it over again and it turned once then made nasty noises! Now I can't turn it at all.

Edit: Yeah it was neutral, wouldn't budge. I can't select reverse either.

Hit the starter motor with a mallet handle whilst turning it over. Can't explain the car not moving in N though. What does the clutch pedal feel like when you push the pedal?

Plugs, etc ok?

when you timed it up, did you lock the crank at #1 TDC using the little 8mm hole thing on the front of the block? (you can guess where I'm going with this I'm sure!)

it's not the starter motor.

Guybrush, no I turned the crank until the notch was facing down and the white marks on the cam belt lined up with the white marks on the cam sprockets and crank sprocket. I then turned the engine over by hand roughly 10 times until the marks lined up again, it was very smooth too. Nothing hit anything and it tuned as it should, it was only once I put the gearbox on I couldn't turn it via the crank bolt anymore, that's when I thought it was in gear hence left it.

Edit, guybrush, no i'm not that's the one thing I may have done wrong.. Can you explain to me why that would cause the issues i'm having?

edit: matt, clutch pedal feels normal.

because the plate is not symmetrical, the central splined bit sticks out further on one side than the other. Put it in the wrong way and it will probably bind on something.

tbh I'm not sure you'd be able bolt the cover plate on like that but its something think about.

so, like someone else said, what does it feel like when you press the clutch?

just had a look at the clutch that came with the block, seems you could bolt it on with the plate on the wrong way round, is it meant to stick out further facing the box or the block?

the cluch pedal feels normal. box is coming off tomorrow.

the 2.0 megane clutch is not the same as the clio's, it's bigger. but similar enough I suppose.

from memory, the sticking out central bit faces away from the flywheel. usually has 'this side out' or something stamped on it anyway...

tried to get the box off but it only went so far and wouldn't clear the inner arch, even with half the subframe dropped. Just going to take engine out again, it's far easier.

Oh and when the box was half off the engine was freely turning :)

yeah i'm a silly boy, the clutch springs was fouling the flywheel bolts! oops. I'll never do that again ha ha.

Coops popped round just as I managed to get the box off, so he helped me 'till it was done!

It's smoking a bit (white) but it's getting less and less the more it's run so I presume it's the crap from the old HG failure, it's not loosing coolant or getting hot at all (doesn't shift from the middle) and it seems to be idling well too, and the gearbox is stupidly smooth! The idle issue I think was a mixture of the inlet gasket, HG and injector seals

Anyways some pics;
