Engine making a ticking noise

I just took the car out and there was a loud audible rattling noise inside the cabin which definitely wasn't there this morning.

It turns out the noise is coming from the engine. Any ideas what could be causing this? Car is an R56 Cooper (not S) and exactly 2 years old. There are no warning signs flashing up on the dash.

Cheers

I'd probably stop driving it until you can get someone to it who can ascertain what it is.

It could be something as simple as a broken heatshield - but if you can't tell for sure, it's a good idea not to test your luck.

Did the noise change with engine speed?

Here is a video

As a general rule I couldn't hear the noise under acceleration but as soon as I took my foot off the gas it was sometimes audible again. It did however seem to randomly disappear at times.
Sounds worryingly like a diesel in the video but it's a petrol.

Edit: This is worrying now:

This is one of the results off Google. I won't accept that this is normal because from outside the car it sounds horrendous and I've done over 22k miles without it so far.

I'm supposed to be doing a 3 hour trip to Essex and back tomorrow I take it that's not a great idea then?

I'd certainly be getting that looked at before starting it again, let alone driving it,

EDIT - Then again I don't know. Reading the posts on the other forum you linked to suggests it's the fuel injectors, can't say I've ever heard a petrol sound so noisey like that before though!

Why are you even caring? It's your Mums car and its covered by warranty *and* Mini Emergency Service.

Simply pick up the phone, call Mini Emergency Service, and let them stress out about whats wrong with it. It's what you pay extra for a new car for.

That's exactly what I'm going to do tomorrow I just wondered if anyone had any ideas on what the cause might be.

Mr common-sense speaketh the truth. I'm guessing this information was only visible in another thread....

Quite likely the cam chain tensioner has expired - quite a common fault. The wonderful BMW build quality strikes again.

Spot on.

Common fault on the new PSA Engines, normally it means having the tensioner replaced. Happened to my Mums R56 S a few months back... the newer ones I think have been revised to solve the problem... the engine will still be a little rattly in mornings though but that's just a characteristic of the engine that can't be avoided i'm afraid :)

Mum caught it just before her years warranty ran out :)

In the context of this thread ownership is misleading and completely irrelevant because the car and running costs are entirely my responsibility.

Apparently the noise from the engine is completely normal. What I was hearing in the cabin was a leaf stuck in the AC. Funny because I turned the AC off and the noise persisted but whatever they've done has worked.

Just keep an eye on it though. My MINI Dealership said that to my mother.. 2 weeks later she had an EML Light on and she had to have half the cam replaced.
