Engine Noises in the Puma... the saga continues

For those who missed the last thread, my puma is making the most bizarre sound you have ever heard (kind of like, chains being dragged through gravel) whenever the VCT system advances the cams and ignition (~5500 rpm dependant on road speed and engine load)

I read another thread which said it might be pinking, so tried a tank of vpower and put some of that octane booster with injector cleaner in it to see if it makes a difference... 60 miles on and its still doing it.

I've booked it into ford, but they wont guarentee its covered under the warentee until they take a closer look.... bit of a bugger as im about to put the car up for sale.... Some people might think just dont go over 5k on the test drive, however, Id be absolutely gutted if I was on the recieving end !!

Any guesses on what it might be? I saw some wynns stuff in halfords that you can put in your oil which sorts out sticking valve lifters and the like, but not even sure what they are !

Be interested to know if anyone has ever heard of this before on puma's.... (its the 1.7 version)

hmmm.. I suppose that would explain why it only happens at high revs, clearly im waking them up !!

I remember hearing about a similar problem on Fiat Barchettas which also have VVT.

Recalls 1999: problem of sticking control valve for engine variable valve timing-makes engine sound like a diesel. Announced on BBC 'Watchdog' 21/1/99.
