Never normally fall foul of things like this, however.....

Wifes car needs a bit of a top up of oil, recommended oil is Castrol Edge 5w-30 fully syntetic.

Popped into Halfords at lunch, picked up a litre bottle, £16.99.

Thats a bit steep I thought, but i want to get it topped up today as i will only forget otherwise.

Had a quick check online just to see what kind of price I should be paying.

Wilkinsons online- £9 a litre.
Asda 4 litres- £36.

:(

i tend to use eurocarparts with 25% club discount. you don't tend to get much off at halfords on oil with a trade card either.

i did however buy some 5w-30 fully synthetic oil recently and did notice that it was a bit more expensive to what i am use to paying.

When I take my car to a garage to change the oil, they say that 10w40 semi-synth is a 'specialist oil' and it costs about £60.. I'm glad I've learned to do it myself, as I managed to get the oil and filter for about £30. It took me about 2 hours on a Saturday morning but I'll be prepared next time and take the undertray off before I start :D

Christ I get 20 litres of GM 5-30 from my dealer for under 40 quid through tradeclub. iirc our filters work out at under 3 quid each for genuine Vauxhall parts when you buy 10

Still better than 45 notes at Halfords.

Asda are currently the cheapest at £36 for 4 litres.

Trade prices in being cheap shocker!

branded oil in being extortionate shocker.

my genuine Vauxhall 5-30 Fully Synthetic works out at 2 and a bit quid a litre the Castrol stuff above is 9 quid a litre :(

only pointing out that the OP should shop around some more, what car is it for?

Yes because buying 1 litre of Castrol in a convenient 1 litre container from a supermarket is just like buying trade quantities of oil, right? It's totally comparable, good one.

I have already demonstrated a source for Edge at £6.50 a litre in this thread anyway.

true but 36 quid for 4 litres is ruddy expensive. and its not as if i'm buying 205l drums for that price its 20l iirc the 205l drums works out at 1.30/1.40 a litre

OP depending on what its going it might be feasible to not go for the castrol

Its for a MCS thats still under warranty.

Plus, much as there probably isnt any need to, I tend to stick to branded oils, I learnt my lesson very quickly with a series of burnt out two strokes when I was younger having used cheap non branded "fully synthetic" two stroke oil.
