How important is the 'C' category in ACEA classification of oils? I'm just looking for oil for the Jag and the manual advises API SJ/EC and ACEA A1 or A3 (5W30). No mention of ACEA C1/2/3 etc. But reading about oils suggests C designations offer better oil for cars with 3-way catalytic converters.. which is surely every petrol car for the last 15+ years?

So, seek out oils also meeting C1/2/3 classifications in addition to what is recommended in the manual (at twice the price), or just go with what the manual says?

Isn't the C rating for diesel engines and A for petrol?

My bad. - It's B for diesel and C is common for low sulphur fuels (which I misunderstood to mean "EURO" spec diesels).

Reading between the lines, a C3 oil is probably also A3?

It looks like C has extra requirements over and above A. C is for DPFs as well as 3 way cats so I guess newer diesels will generally require C.

On the API spec, C is for diesels and S is for petrols :)
