Engine overheating warning

Hi all. I have a Mondeo 2016 and yesterday whilst driving to a place I got the engine overheating warning and noticed that the speed was being limited. However after some minutes the tempereture indicator went from maximum to normal (middle).
I then checked the coolant and noticed that the liquid level was way below minimum. I topped it up on the way back and the car did the same thing. There was no leak because the reservoir level was at the same level.

Does anyone know what might be the issue or what might be causing this? Could it be a sensor issue?

I'd go with a sensor issue if it went from max to normal in a few seconds. The best way to be sure is if you've got an obd2 device and use for Forscan software to monitor values from your ecu and tcu modules etc.

Not sure a 2016 mondeo uses the same thing but our Focus 2014 model works well with a ELM 327 USB Ford device from ebay and has a toggle switch to read from all the different modules in the car.

If you can drive around with a laptop in the front seat and watch / record the values of the temperature sensors then you can try to narrow down the issue.

Not in seconds but maybe 3 minutes or so. I don’t have anything of that, but would this something easy to fix in any garage?

we had a slightly similar problem with our 2009 older mondeo 2.0 diesel. the temp guage went high then middle, we did the same topped water up.
i checked connections etc and scanned it nps.
a few days later the temperature started going high then middle and continued all the time it was driving.
checked the thermostat and housing , put a new switch in etc nothing sorted it.
in the end i had to replace the wire, if i remember correctly it goes to the ecu then clocks turned out to be the fault so all good but very worrying whilst it happened.

from the sender to ecu.

at a push when its doing it switch the engine off and then try moving some of the wiring harness around a bit trial and error but it was what twigged me to a harness problem after a few times i got the harness in a position that enabled the fault to vanish for about and hour of running...

These kind of faults are a PITA to diagnose and although a garage will do this for you, you'll save a crap ton if you can do a bit of the diagnosis yourself! As said above, if it is high then normal really quickly then it's more likely to be a sensor / electrical fault and a garage will read the error code for you for about £45 but that's the cost of the reader and time to just do it yourself. :) (Less really!)

If it was high and stays high I'd be careful driving as it would / could cause issues, but it sounds like the car is actually fine but just reading something wrong every now and again.

If you are OK paying a garage to do the work then they can read the code and then advise you on the best course of action.

Were you stationary/slow moving when it started to overheat?

I’ve had this in the past, radiator fan fuse failed en route, only realised there was a problem when I was approaching my destination, slow moving city traffic and stop/start at the lights. Temp kept creeping up and once moving the airflow of motion would bring the temp back inline.

What engine, and mileage is your Mondeo? Have you had the timing belt and water pump changed? The coolant system is a bit of a weak spot on these. I would first get the water pump checked. The factory pump has a plastic impeller which can fail, and you can replace with an aftermarket unit which has a metal impeller. The thermostat housing is prone to cracking as it’s made from plastic. I would also check the EGR valve as this is another possible cause.

forgot to mention some of the later fords have a sensor box on the fan and i think the blue wire breaks entering it causing no fan, had to repair this in the past.

Hi all, thank you all for your inputs. Managed to get time to take the car to the garage. Luckily they had availability. The issue was in the water pump. So they had to change all that kit including the timing belts like Meatball suggested.

What a pain and the fact of having to deal with an unexpected bill.

Thank you all and merry Christmas.

Glad to hear the issue is resolved. That's an interesting one for me because I'd expect it to get hot and stay hot as the pump isn't working right. Unless it was sticking but I guess that depends where it is in the engine process because when they stick they can shred the cambelt!

Hopefully you're able to absorb the cost of the repair as I know a lot of people would struggle with a bill like that, especially around Christmas! :(

Yeah, they said like one side of the engine was getting the water pumped into but could get the water off. Something like that. It’s a big hit but at least the engine wasn’t affect, pfff!
