Engine rebuild help

You wouldn't scrap it for a £100, could get a grand on ebay at least I would think as a spare or repair.

It doesn't matter now anyway as OP has gone ahead with a rebuild and fingers crossed it all comes good for him.

Great. Getting £1000 for it on ebay as spares or repairs is still a greater loss than fixing it for £1.8k and selling it for £4k.

Good luck and let us know how you get on. :)

£1800 to fix minimum, if new valves or pistons or whatever else is needed it will go over the £2000 mark easily.

If it goes well and you are right then great!

Don't tell the buyer it has been done, provide all service history apart from that bit. Done.

Except that the engine/chassis will have unmatching VIN (if we're talking about a recon engine from eBay etc rather than a repair of existing).

Well, no, they probably wouldn't tbf.

Although I did check once in the past, but not the 5+ subsequent cars I've bought.

Why would he be? It's a sound way to recoup money.

1) Scrap the car for £100. You've lost £4k on potentially selling the car if it was working.
2) Spend £1.8k fixing it and sell for £4k. You've recouped money from the sale.

Because if the plan was to sell the can anyway, why not take the cheapest option, and get a second hand engine.

The OP arguement for getting a rebuild was basically for reliability, if he's selling it on once the work is done, that really isn't an issue. Most decent secondhand engine suppliers will provide a 1-3 month warranty on any engine they sell, which would cover the time taken to sell it on.

I've not looked at cost of these engines secondhand, but going by whats been mentioned in the thread already (this may be incorrect), he's just wasted £800-1500+ depending on what the rebuilders find once they open up the engine.

get engine from breakers with decent rep ask if they will fit it. most will or know of someone who will.

price you on about i would just scrap car. we had a merc on farm my dad got for less than 500 quid we just blast about :D

money you being quoted your having your pants down.

they arent rare.£500 for a decent engine find a decent mech they will stick it in for £500 no problem. its few hrs work if they competent.even if they slow its a one day job.

Hi
3. The following process is done to the engine
New piston rings
New main bearings.
New big end bearings
All new gaskets and oil seals .
Cylinder head skimmed
Cylinder head pressure tested
Valves reground and reseated
Recon oil pump

New timing chain kit
New guide tensioner

I would expect to see the bores being re-honed or at the very least glaze busted with new rings.

New cam bearings? New cam(s)?

If it were mine I'd replace the engine with a S/H unit.

Wouldn't ever do it with a generic place only ever use specialists for the car (not engine rebuild 'specialists' or a replacement used engine).

I had an engine rebuilt which failed 3 days later, took me about 10m for it to go through small claims court.

GF's dad took his car to a different place (near heathrow) for an engine rebuild and when I heard about it (with above experience) I did some googling and they had awful reviews (talking 50+ reviews with a 1/5 average) - result was he had to pay them for disassembling the engine and then sold the car for scrap.

Not the infamous "Heathrow Engine centre" (Or what it was called back in the 80's)

Quite possibly, it was very nearby. Just had a google and it seems it probably was that place. Sadly I wasn't in the loop until it was too late. The second I caught wind, I googled and promptly drove him down there (unannounced) and we found his car (Peugeot 806) being used as storage for a load of engine parts - they claimed it was all from his engine but I counted at least 3 heads in there. He paid them a few hundred £ and we waited there for a few hours for a local scrap car dealer to come and take the car away (at least we got £100 scrap for it and I pinched a few smaller bits to ebay and try get him some money back)

My own car (and subsequent court case) was with Jap Auto Parts (306-314 Cherrywood Road birmingham iirc). They have been through numerous names over the years ranging from Jap Auto Parts to Find A Engine to Top Engine to Top Engine & Gearbox etc etc etc. Very intimidating & aggressive people (common trend) and when the time came they also ignored all court papers etc and denied having received copies of anything from me. Pretty sure they just fit engines from write offs etc (not very carefully) and hope for the best :S

I know the jap auto parts place well, they are breakers, either knackered mini cabs or write offs. To be fair i have had parts of em before, but ive heard the engines running prior to buying them. They are a rip off, and a bunch of &&&&'s :p

Ok so they did the engine for the price quoted. They try to squeeze an alternator and a supercharger but i said don't worry those are fine.
My wife did over 5k and so far so good.
