ENGINEERING PROCESSOR

Normal CPUs are locked. The multiplicator and the FSB are then set and cannot not be changed. …. This CPU multiplicators & the FSB can be freely selected. Normally bios updates are needed.

THE CPU IS OPTIMAL FOR OVERCLOCKING

Anyone used one.. and are they as good as they sound? Multiplier unlocked etc??

They're full of bugs so no, I wouldn't want to use one on a daily basis :p Make for great benchmarks though as they're unlocked...

I have a 6700ES, its a review sample though so it's unlocked downwards but not upwards.

Pretty bog standard cpu tbh, 100% stable, overclocks like you would expect.

It depends at what point in the engineering cycle it is s to whether its stable or not, I don't think the unstable ones would normally make it out to the general market?

Someone on here (I can't remember who) had a C2D ES and it got silly clocks on stock volts.
My E6700 ES does 3.6Ghz on a crappy air cooler on a very small amount of volts (can't remember offhand, been a while since it was on air). The ES C2D chips run a lower default voltage than the retail ones. It does 4.3Ghz comfortably on 1.525v.

However the part about bugs is true.. you just have to make sure you get one of the ones that were very close to retail stepping.

I've got a "Step 5" ES chip (retail is "Step 6", or maybe later now) and it's never given me any trouble at all.

Engineering sample are generally pretty good as they are unlocked upwards. Obviously, they are not the best long term solution as there is no warrenty with them and they have been known to go bang quickly!

I personally wouldnt buy one from Echo Bravo Alpha Yankee, as chances are it'll be on its last legs as ES chips get proper hammered for benchmarking! Of course that is, if the price is stupidly low! :)

Every ES sample i've seen has run perfectly, they've overclocked well and been mx unlocked. They tend to either go for daft money or for next to nothing depending on the people who are interested.
