England squad for Euro 2012 qualifiers v Bulgaria (3 September) and Switzerland (7 September):

Goalkeepers: Scott Carson, Ben Foster, Joe Hart.

Defenders: Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Michael Dawson, Kieran Gibbs, Phil Jagielka, Glen Johnson, Joleon Lescott , Matthew Upson.

Midfielders: Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Steven Gerrard, Adam Johnson, James Milner, Theo Walcott, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Ashley Young.

Forwards: Darren Bent, Carlton Cole, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Wayne Rooney.

So, anyone surprised by the announcement? Any players you feel are missing or don't warrant a place? I'm a litte surprised Tom Huddlestone is not in the squad. I think he is a good midfielder who could really help the team. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Kieran Gibbs, I was impressed by him when I saw him play before.

SWP ahead of anyone is a surprise, especially Lennon. I don't think either player are good enough for International football but everything SWP can do Lennon does better.

I like Gibbs, he looks promising, but how can he be in the England squad if he hasn't even kicked a ball in the PL this season?

It's really a matter of trying a few other players in the system - and the rough idea of the core of the team.

Lescott and upson should not be in the squad neither should Barry or Wright Phillips.

Upson is the worst central defender currently playing in the league, Lescott is just plain rubbish, Barry's many short comings have been discussed here before and SWP is a joke.

What's your starting XI from that? I'm struggling to put together anything like a decent side.

Hart

Cole Cahill Jagielka Johnson

Young Milner Gerrard Johnson

Defoe Rooney

That's appalling.

Well what you can see is that its going to be either the worst 4-3-3 in the history of football as he has only picked two genuine central midfielders, the others are either wingers or converted wingers, or its a bog standard 4-4-2.

The only thing I can see working is 5-4-1 picking from that squad, but thats about as likely as me winning the lottery and Cameron Diaz hitting on me when she presents the big carboard cheque.

Our frontline looks very average: Darren Bent, Carlton Cole, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Wayne Rooney.

And even Rooney doesnt deserve to be up front with his current form. We need goal scorers and how many of them have scored this season? A couple of goals between all of them in open play? Surprised he didnt give Carrol a shot at it with his current form.

bit dissapointed that Matt jarvis was called in to the provisional 30, and then dropped for SWP!! Jarvis has been playing really well for us recently, and at least he would be a bit different to the usual England guff

I would pick this XI (Walcott gets the nod because he has been on fire at the start of this season)

---------------Hart--------------
Johnson--Jagielka--Lescott---Cole
--------------Barry--------------
---------Gerrard---Milner---------
Walcott------------------Johnson
-------------Rooney-------------

but I agree, the squad is looking very patchy; a few faces I hoped to God I'd never have to see in an England shirt: Carlton Cole, Scott Carson, Matthew Upson, Shaun Wright-Phillips to name a few. :(

Disappointed not to see Huddlestone in this squad, I think he has been very influential for Spurs at the start of this season, and maybe it's time we gave him a go. If I was manager, I'd pick him alongside a pacy destroyer-type midfielder (maybe Cattermole? idk) and then Gerrard in front of them.
