England squad announcement

that's a lot of CBs.

I'd have liked to have seen Elliot, Barkley and Ward Prowse. They're all players that could come on as subs and make a difference. Neither Jones or Mainoo do that. Wharton over Barkley?

I'd have liked to have seen Maguire dropped.
Surprised Elliot isn’t in there with his energy in midfield and an eye for a goal.

And the most assists for midfielders in 2024 aside from KDB
Stat-picking is such nonsense, why aren't you considering this entire season when talking about stats?

Gallagher has more assists that Elliot this season - and Chelsea have been fairly rubbish. I think Elliot should be in the squad but not because of a 5 month snapshot of stats.

7 goals 9 assist in 3666 minutes for Gallagher
4 goals 10 assists in 2589 minutes for Elliott

Pl only
5 and 7 in 3100 for Gallagher
3 and 6 in 1300 for Elliott

Surely stats over the last 5 months are a pretty good indicator of current form? Particularly for a young player who's developing. It shows that he's come on significantly in his ability to influence the results of games.

If you only include players for form over the full season, presumably you're also not bringing Quansah, Maguire, Shaw, Gomez, Mainoo, Wharton, Eze, Grealish, Maddison and Toney?

No, I totally think that form should be considered and I think you're right about it being particularly important for young developing players - but I also think you can't discount the first half of a season when looking at stats.

I'm actually surprised that Toney has made the squad over Solanke - and similarly I think Grealish and Maddison's form is relatively concerning going into the tournament vs. Eze/Mainoo etc. who have all had a really solid last 3 months.

At the same time, we all are aware of how good both Grealish and Maddison can be so it's one of those where stats don't paint a full picture - I think it's my least favourite trend in modern football to have stats be used in particular ways to suit certain arguments.

Really? Average at keeper, no decent left back, and very light defensively in midfield. We're basically a team of number 10s, wingers, and strikers. We'll get found out against most decent sides.

all good up front and crap from there back, add all together and he will decide to play defensive, negative tactics

Hopefully that's the last we've seen if Henderson. Not sure Grealish or Maddison should be in there either personally as neither have done particuarly well this season but Eze and Wharton deserve a chance to see what they can do.

Doubt Gomez goes.
Proper left sided player would be better really especially with the supposed no.1 having not played for ages.

those are the only 2 i can see in the list i've seen, agree about the left sided player, but this is southgate, he just doesn't seem to like left backs playing left back :D

mind you he might have been watching pep play centre halves at full back and think "i can do that....." , so Mcguire might get a look in :p

I just heard that Shaw might not even be fit, Apparently Southgate has said this??

I'd play Trent at LB tbh, not even as a makeshift, just because it'd be easier for him coming in on his right foot when doing the inverted role. Play Bowen as LM to give a bit of protection.

This would be my starting XI

---------Pickford
Kyle--Stones--Maguire--Trent
------------Rice
Saka--Foden--Jude---Bowen
-----------Kane

I really hope Southgate doesn't play two defensive mid's....sigh

southgate doesn't trust trent to play right back, so can't see him considering him for left back.

seen it mentioned shaw is so-so , other than trippier\gomez maybe he's likely to try a back 3 with all the central defenders hes listed.

realise the initial list is 33 , and has to be shortened to 23 ?

He wont play Trent at LB, guaranteed. It's what i would do though, every team has to usually shoehorn a player in somewhere at international tournaments
