Englands World Cup Failure

"Why England Lose" by Simon Kuper & Stefan Szymanski is an interesting read.

Conclusion: For a country of our population, GDP and international footballing experience, we do pretty well. We win about 2/3 of our games (more under Capello) but that still means that winning a knock-out competition is going to be extremely unlikely.

Rubbish defence. Terry needs a speedy partner and someone with a little higher predigree. There is a reason why Upson is a highbury cast off.

I would love Cappello to ask Pearce to compile a list of youngesters and then remove all the oldies. Lets start afresh and introduce some real pace throughout the team. I would be tempted to promote a new captain and start cutting like he is George Osborne. Get the lads thinking like a team as in the case of Spain. May take some time and not be pretty but theres plenty of talent floating about a al sturridge etc

The Germans out thought and played as better unit, same old stroy as far as England is concerned. Outwitted!

this is my thoughts.

Capello is under contract till Euro 2012. Let today be the starting point of a new era.

Drop Lampard, rooney, upson, gerrard, heskey etc.. all the players who just never perform for england. Start again with some fresn youngsters who actually want to play for their country.

Stop flogging a dead horse and star again from fresh.

If he is unable to get a team to play together from all the young talent in the championship / premiership and we have a similar crap display at euro2012 dont renew his contract.

this isnt about winning or losing, this is about seeing a set of players play on the world stage who want to be there.

Game after game they showed no desire to play or have any impact on the game. There was no hunger.

Statistically speaking the 0-0 draw against algeria was a good result for a group game. It helped get us through to the last 16 and avoided us giving the opponents 3 points.

But it was the manor in which they played that angered most. high expectations is not the issue here. If england lost a hard fought match to germany 2-1 due to that 1 disallowed goal the press wouldnt be nearly so bad.

But it wasnt a hard fought game, they just let the germans walk all over us.

It would be VERY controversial to drop those players though. I don't think any manager would have the balls to do it.

I certainly don't think Capello is the man to action those changes.

We have just won the Euro U17 championship, so hope is on the horizon.

.... and the Germans all (most) of the other youth championships but then they have a huge youth investment program. So there is no hope.

Drop Rooney, LOL!

The same Rooney who spearheaded your qualifying campaign, the same Rooney who showed in 2004 that he can easily play at the top stage.

As opposed to dropping Rooney, you should be building the team entirely around him to try and get the best out of him.

A bad tournament does not make him a bad player.

I do love it how when England win he talks perfectly acceptable English :D

When England don't do well, he some how loses this ability :D

Building a team around one single person is going to be the quickest way to failure.

Everyone needs to prove they deserve a spot, and they need to prove so in an England shirt.

the same rooney that did literally nothing all tournament

yet commanded a starting role every game ??

Football doesnt work like that. You dont perform, you get dropped. People make excuses saying its because he's not match fit due to too many games.

Messi made 53 appearances for his club last season - rooney made 44. So Messi is capable of 11 more appearances, and still putting in a decent enough performance in the final group game against greece to get man of the match ??

If he's not capable of being fit for a world cup after a domestic season, then he obviously doesnt have the physical fitness required to be an england player and shouldnt be picked.

Or is that he simply couldnt be bothered with playing for england this year, and thinks the fans, and everybody else is in the wrong except the players ?

They've got too arrogant, too incapable of feeling they are capable of playing badly. The outburst against algeria showed this. Capello in the press conference after the germany game saying we "played well" just shows arrogance runs throug this whole camp.

They need knocking down a peg or two.

if wayne rooney is such an amazing superstar world player, he should be able to work his way back into the team and get his place back. On the merit of this tournament however he should be dropped, along with all the other players who cant or dont want to perform for england *cough* lampard.

Stubbornness on the part of the manager & poorly performing players.

4-4-2 is an outdated formation, and an utter joke when you fill it with out of position players (Gerrard).

Worst game of football I've seen England play in a long time. I thought I was watching Wales :o

I don't buy this " our players are rubbish and are only made to look good by foreign players".

Roney played fantastically for Man U this season and thats with a midfield that was often comprised of Giggs, Scholes, Carrick, Nani and a defence of Ferdiand, Vidic, Brown and Evra with him being backed up by berbatov.

Let us not forget that John O'shea and Gary Neville were also often a part of the team.

So basically Rooney was only any good because he played with Berbatov, Nani and Evra??

Rubbish and you all know it.

You might want to check your arithmetic here. :p

However I'd agree that no player should be considered undroppable, if players are to be picked on the basis of form and how well they will fit into the team then that may mean that you've got to drop your most technically skilled player(s), at least from the starting eleven. It might be worth taking them along as an impact substitute of course regardless, rather like a wildcard in golf but they don't necessarily need to start.

None of them would play. ;)

As I understand it the appearance money is being given to charity so the players aren't directly benefitting unless they're a registered charity - you could make a joke after the performances I suppose but let's draw a veil over that...

yes a mixture of players who can pass and who have pace...england dont like to come deep and pass and have no pace. i said this 7 pages ago..

the players shouldnt even get paid to play.

they should get paid expenses, flights.

if they dont want to play for their country for the privelege of playing they should not be there.

apeaking as a manu fan i was really dissapointed with rooney.

out of those players you mentioned you forgot valencia who did provide loads of crosses for rooney he even said it himslef in an interview and praised valenica

you cant put all the blame on the formation and manager the players should have been able to put up some sort of a fight.
