Behind you... Naked!
I have been a solid KDE fan for .. .Well, when did Mandrake 6 come out?

Well, since then. I loved it...

About the time that Mandrake 10 was here, things started to get a bit iffy however, and by teh time KDE 4 was released, that was enough for me... Its utterly disgusting and I hate it.. No, scratch that, I utterly despise it.

I moved to gnome.

I love Gnome, I originally thought that it was quite ugly and I do miss the apps that KDE gave me, but some are perfectly useable under gnome without the KDE code too, to over time I have grown to love it more and more.

Then first of all, ubuntu bent me over and gave me a right going over with that unity rubbish, thankfully I found a way to get around it, but I feel the dammage was done.

I have been using Sabayon on my main PC for some years now, and Ubuntu is a great setup for easy use, but I have now moved away from ubuntu for other reasons too, and so, I deided to splash mint onto that.

Now here we have hit on another issue... Gnome 3.2?

I mean come on! - WTF is this junk? Windows 8?

Stuff it. I no longer care, I have had nothing but getting messed about by plonkers who dont see to actually use a PC and instead design the Operating system for other idiots.

I no longer want anything to do with gnome, I have now gone to XFCE.

Here is the doozie... Windows 7 is perfect. Its not only perfect, its also flawless too!

If Windows 8 keeps on the path that it is on, then that will make it another Vista, and with Linux going that way too, I am starting to wonder if its even worth bothering with PCs at all.

I mean, it certainly looks like the age of the PC has gone over the hill and is now heading on a downward path.

No longer will be see PCs with the good old WIMP GUI, and this is what I love with them.

But these new GUIs now... Its hard to find words that portray my feelings towards the coders without being permanently banned for such filthy language.

XFCE here I come.

SMN: Say no more eh? Its bloody awful.

D Brennen: Yeah I tried LXDE... I got the Mint / Debian version. Its not bad.

Scougar : Yeah I have. I got rid of the Junk and its still not right. Its clearly designed for a non-mouse / touch screen way of working. It is, quite frankly. a lof of old Ball Lucks

If you like Win 7 then use Win 7, the beatufy of choice eh? No one owes you anything. How much did that Linux distro cost you?

I do use Win7. I use it because so many games I have not yet managed to get workign on Linux, but if I could... Its gone!

No, admittedly, no one does owe me anything, and as for costs, I have you there because I pay for what I use.

I download games and movies galore, I must have downloaded hundreds of games and certainly thousands of Movies, but not one single pirate copy of anything, will you find in my collection. Everythign thats worth the price, gets my money, if I like the copy, then I will buy the game / Movie, if I dont like it, its gone... Simple as.

Its the same with Linux and anything else... I put my money towards a number of projects.

I used to donate to

KDE ( Stopped when KDE 4 was out )
Sabayon ( about to stop cos thats gone gnome 3 )
Ubuntu ( I donated £25 each distro release until I saw unity, I have not bothered since )
Gnome ( Stopped last month purely because of 3 )

I have a couple of others but I still donate to them, so... Yeah, I have paid $10 a month for some time now, to just gnome alone never mind the others , so yeah, I feel they owe me at least some gratitude.

Well, I have thrown in xubuntu 11.10

I moved off ubuntu but really only because of unity but if Im not going gnome then why not give it a shot here.

Im half ok with it.

Im messing about with the visuals / themes etc to make it look better and Im not happy with any of the themes really... They all seem to be a bland grey and on my Laptop, it really does look a bit john Major if you get my meaning. It just feels boring.

I have the MiNT / DEBIAN XFCE disks upstairs and I will go play over the next few days, plus I got dreamLinux and I rather like that for what I have played with it in a V.M but for some strange reason, when I try plopping that onto a Flash drive, the flashdrive wont play in the Lappy ? - Im out of DVDs so it will have to wait. Its debian based so Im ok with that.

Mentioning older Desktops, I was very much in love with BlackBox for a while... I do also like enlightenment in some ways, but I have never managed to find a stable setup... I think perhaps Sabayon is the best for stability but other than that...?

TBH if you don't like KDE 4 or Gnome 3 why not just remove it and install a previous version. That is the good thing about Linux is you can do just that. I wholly agree with you about gnome but kde 4.5 is pretty good when you can configure it to be like kde 3 lol.

KDE4
Ok, maybe I am being too harsh on KDE4. Its mostly the widgets that I despise, the desktop icons not on the desktop but inside a window called desktop... Little things like that get on my pip, and WTF is that thing with moving, rotating, and resizing... Well, everything ?

Is it just me or has Microsoft started to push more OS's more often. before it used to be 2 - 4 year cycle seems to be quicker now, maybe just me tho lol

Its you!

Microsoft has always had the life cycle of its O/S's to be 2-3 years, its just that we get to hear about them sooner thats all, but the release times are very much the sme now as they have always been.

Just to add... I have been using xubuntu on my laptop for a short while and its nice, I like it etc, but I have gone back to MiNT 11 for now.

I think that Mandriva 2010 is by far the bestt O/S on that leptop. Only Mandriva 2010 and Suse 11 seem to allow me to have full compiz eye candy etc all playing nicely on that, while others simply dont.

But in terms of ease of use, I feel that I was happiest with MiNT / Gnome 2 and so, I have gone there.

Have you given slackware a try yet? im running it on an old dell inspiron 1501 and i have all the effects, this is even from the open source driver as ati doesnt support mine anymore.

Not gone Slackware for some time.

However, my main OS for some time has been Sabayon.

I kind of started to lose fith with 6 but 8 is awful.

My Linux PC is currently twiddling its thumbs with a basic Debian setup and I quite like it. I think its staying there.

The Laptop is back on Mint 11 and I am just not going to upgrade it - its also fine as it is.

Well, for what its worth, while my Laptop has MiNT 11 on it, and that Is using Gnome 2 without the stupidity... Sorry I meant unity, I have to say that I have been utterly knocked back by Linux as of late... So much so, that I have not used it for a while now.

Plus...

What is really worrying is that my main Linux PC has been running Sabayon since 3.5 and I found 5.5 to be the latest stable release, but that too is now running Windows... I mean.. FFS! Windows after all those years!???

I really think that after all these years, that Linux and I are about to depart.

I want so much to stick with it, but for me, its simply too much changes in such a short time space and I am seriously feeling like I am spinning around.

That said. Windows 8 is also the start of my move off PCs altogether! - hell, my Atari Falcon access the internet just as well as my PCs do, plus its a bit more fun.

No, tjhey have not, but thats the problem isnt it?

Win8 is designed to be used on mobile devices such as ipad style machines and it forces desktop / Laptop PCs to work in the same way.

All the new waves of Mobile phones work in the same way, and now with Windows 8 workign in the same way, it is a massive move for Microsoft to do such a thing, but it most certainly isnt a bad move for them... Its a brilliant one.

almost every PC user out there is a rank amateur at computers and if their compouter works in the same way as their mobile phones... They are sorted.

For you and I, its a disgusting and painful reminder abotu just how crappy things are getting, but for the vast majority of users, its a good move.

I hate the way its going... I truly do.

Im really no longer impressed with PCs and I am using my Atari more and more. It does everythign my PCs does except gaming and even then, Im only seemingly playing Dawn Of War these days.
