I have a superflower golden green 550W power supply. Would I be able to run a gigabyte gtx 980 g1 gaming?
Thanks
DJL99 :)

Yes, just one card.
My specs at the moment are
MSI R9 290
AMD 8350
8GB CORSAIR VENGEANCE RAM
CORSAIR H55
X5 CORSAIR FANS
I am planning to get an I7 4790K once I've sold some old PC components. Is a gtx 980 overkill for 1080p? Should I get a gtx 970 instead?

Are the 290 and 970 similar in performace?

I have a Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB

Yes, quite similar, not worth the money you need to lay aside imo

I'd recommend getting an SSD for a nice boost - makes everything snappy and load times in games/applications much quicker

YOUR BASKET
1 x Crucial MX100 256GB SATA 2.5” 7mm SSD + 9.5mm Adapter (CT256MX100SSD1) £79.99
Total : £88.69 (includes shipping : £7.25).

I have an AOC I2369VM Monitor

That looks okay to me, nothing too special (IPS) but not really worth changing, unless you look at 1440p or 144Hz :)

YOUR BASKET
1 x Acer K272HUL 27" Widescreen LED Gaming Slim Bezel Flicker FREE Monitor - Black £299.99
1 x AOC G2460PQU 24" Widescreen 144Hz 1ms Gaming LED Monitor - Gunmetal £193.99
1 x AOC G2460FQ 24" Widescreen 144Hz 1ms Gaming LED Monitor - Gunmetal £169.99
Total : £686.89 (includes shipping : £19.10).

But no real point for the money you would have to spend, so spend £80 for the SSD (MX100 256gb)

I think I need the 970 because I want to be able to play most or all of the upcoming games on ultra with aa at 60+ fps. Far cry 4 specs recommend an r9 290x, which I don't have. I don't want to run this game at anything below high.

You can on a R9 290.

Ignore the specs.

R9 290X vs R9 290 - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1056?vs=1068

Nothing in it, and if you have an overclocked from factory R9 290 then its equal to a stock R9 290X.

You also do not need a new monitor;)

If you look here - http://www.techspot.com/review/736-amd-radeon-r9-290/page4.html

It shows the R9 290 getting an average of 63.7fps @ 1920x1200 on Far Cry 3 which is a slightly higher resolution than you are playing at
Not so sure about Far Cry 4 (what it will be?) but I'm sure it'll be able to play with similar numbers

I will be able to afford the 970, so I'm going to go ahead and get it. In my opinion, the 970 seems faster in benchmarks and it will be good for futureproofing my PC. I will pair it with an I7 4790K, so there must be some improvement there over the 290 with an 8350.

Ok.

It is your money.

The move to intel will benefit a bit.

But do one thing for me, play the game with what you have first.
